Potential for major development down by the Lakeshore
With a name like Lakeshore, it's unsurprising that this South Milwaukee neighborhood is beside Lake Michigan. All residents are within 1 mile of public beaches, boat ramps and fishing piers, and a few homeowners enjoy private lake access from their backyards without paying too steep a price. "We've got some of the more affordable lakefront property anywhere in the Milwaukee metro area," says Erik Brooks, writer for the South Milwaukee Blog and former city mayor. "It's just how we developed the southeast side of town." The rest of the neighborhood has other single-family homes, apartments and a large industrial site ready for mixed-use redevelopment — a rarity in the fully developed city, Brooks says. As new opportunities are considered, locals are still within a few miles of all South Milwaukee offers, from expansive green spaces to growing commercial centers.
Turning former factories into new housing opportunities
Residential streets only make up about half of the neighborhood, but home offerings are still diverse. A few apartment and condominium complexes are at the center of the community, offering units for rent and sale. Condos sell closer to $130,000, while detached homes range between $210,000 and $350,000. Cul-de-sacs and looping streets offer split-level, ranch-style and bi-level homes. Towering trees shade medium-sized yards, and basketball hoops line driveways. Homes have either attached or detached garages, so street parking is rarely needed, except for the odd motorboat parked along the curb. Homes closer to the lake cost more for their size and shoreline access, so prices range between $450,000 and $780,000.A 30-acre industrial site occupies the other half of the community. "It was a factory for 100 years, but now it's a pretty cool lakefront property possibility," Brooks says. It was initially home to Milwaukee Equipment before becoming Everbrite's headquarters for almost 60 years. The factory closed in 2020, and while Brooks says it was a blow to lose another heritage manufacturer, the city has taken proposals for redevelopment to heart. The lot's future is still undecided, but city mockups envision it as a mixed-use space with medium-density housing, new retail spaces, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and expanded public shoreline access.
Enjoying Lake Michigan from Grant Park or South Metro Fishing Pier
While some homes have private access to Lake Michigan, most people tow their boats to the South Milwaukee Yacht Club to get on the water. A pedestrian bridge connects the club to Grant Park Beach, where crowds swim, play volleyball and rent kayaks. Friday nights bring live music to the beach, which people can enjoy from Frech's Beachside Grille. Grant Park also has hundreds of acres of forest with trails, cliffside overlooks, playgrounds and a golf course. On the other side of the community, South Metro Fishing Pier offers another sandy spot to lounge and go swimming. The pier wraps around the South Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant, creating a long stretch to cast a line into the water. By Lakeview Elementary School, teams play baseball on the South Milwaukee Little League fields.
Crispy catfish and bustling Downtown Market stalls not far from Lakeshore
The neighborhood has no businesses, but most of the city's stores and restaurants are less than 1 mile away. The closest is Jack's of All Trade, a vintage-looking bar where people have a beer and play slots. People grab groceries at Pick n' Save and ALDI a few blocks away. The Seafood Shack Restaurant & Bar is known for its fried catfish filets, colorful cocktails and hookah service by request. Downtown, residents browse mom and pop shops and frequent locally owned restaurants. The South Milwaukee Downtown Market opens every Thursday evening in summer, and annual events bring crowds to the streets. Bucyrus Commons holds concerts, Moran's Pub has a weeklong Saint Patrick's celebration and Milwaukee Avenue hosts Heritage Days parades.
Lakeshore students attend well-rated public schools
Students attend Lakeview Elementary School, which is just outside the neighborhood's former factory site. The school has a B-minus rating on Niche. Older students attend the C-rated South Milwaukee Middle School, followed by South Milwaukee High School, which has a B-minus score and specialized Career and Technical Education classrooms.
Fifth Avenue connects to Downtown South Milwaukee
The community's lack of sidewalks means most residents are car-dependent. Fifth Avenue is the main road in and out, and a few bus stops sit along it. The avenue stretches to Milwaukee Avenue, downtown's primary corridor. Residents are also less than 1 mile from State Route 32, the city's core thoroughfare to larger cities. The neighborhood is within 3 miles of Aurora St Luke's South Shore Hospital and 6 miles from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
