Lakeview is a quieter alternative to more affluent lake communities
West of the neighboring community of Lakeshore , Lakeview has a reputation for well-maintained homes, a short walk from the waves of Lake Michigan. Unlike other lake regions, however, many see it as underappreciated. “It’s a lot like Chicago in that sense,” says Nancy Resto, a broker with Coldwell Banker Commercial Realty. “The north shore is more affluent, while the south shore has never been fully utilized.” Though Historic Lakeview is to its north, this area focuses more on modern construction than renovated centennial houses. The result is a lake neighborhood with lower real estate prices than areas like Whitefish Bay or Fox Point .
Compact lots have midcentury homes and alley access
Homes are arranged in a snug grid of rectangular lots that rarely reach a fifth of an acre. Driveways with carports and one-car garages are standard, and occasional sidewalks add walkability. Front lawns are minimal, while backyards tend to end in alley access. Well-maintained midcentury homes made up the lion’s share of styles, and Cape Cod or ranch-style houses generally sell between $200,000 and $360,000, depending on location and amenities.
Grant Park offers trails, golf and a Lake Michigan beach
The Mary C. Nelson Arboretum, a quiet green space with dozens of mature trees, occupies the center of the neighborhood. Right next door is the South Milwaukee Little League headquarters, which features two fully lit baseball diamonds with seating and dugouts. Just northeast of Lakeview is Grant Park, the oldest park in Milwaukee County. About 400 acres in size, this public green space features a beach area along Lake Michigan, a public golf course and a 2-mile trail through scenic woodlands.
Locally owned shops and restaurants line Milwaukee Avenue
Nearby Milwaukee Avenue is home to locally owned stores and eateries. “There’s a smattering of businesses there,” says Resto. “Places like resale stores, craft shops and mom and pop restaurants.” More conventional shopping is at locations like Marquette Plaza, which has a Dollar General for groceries. Barbiere’s Italian Inn combines Italian-American cuisine with the low-lit atmosphere of a classic tavern. A local favorite is The Snack: two meatballs with garlic bread and a salad. Azteca offers an upscale experience with familiar Mexican favorites like flautas, burritos and chimichangas. The South Milwaukee Downtown Market is held every Thursday from May until October. Vendors include local farms, bakeries and crafters.
South Milwaukee schools have worked with NASA and the Packers
Students usually begin at Lakeview Elementary School, which has a B-minus from Niche. From there, they’ll head to South Milwaukee Middle School, which has a C. In 2025, several SMMS students were chosen by NASA for their TechRise Student Challenge, which saw them designing and building a temperature sensor to measure air pollution. Older students will attend B-minus-rated South Milwaukee High School, which received a football field renovation grant from the Green Bay Packers in 2024. Wisconsin has open enrollment, which allows students to apply for public schools outside their home district.
Heritage Days brings music, food and parades each summer
Held every summer, South Milwaukee Heritage Days is one of the largest public events in South Milwaukee. The weeklong festival includes live music, an art fair, a golf tournament, a brat fry and a parade.
Downtown Milwaukee is 11 miles away
The Milwaukee County Transit System has bus stops along Columbia Ave, providing straightforward access to public transportation. The nearest highway is State Route 32, which leads to the heart of downtown Milwaukee , about 11 miles north.
