Midcentury homes and suburban charm define the M District

M District is a community that hugs the western half of Downtown South Milwaukee , creating a residential zone of midcentury housing. Divided by Oak Creek and the Oak Leaf Trail, the area remains relatively affordable, compared to other neighborhoods in Milwaukee. "It is and has always been a working-class area," says Peter Adams, a broker with Coldwell Banker Realty. "It's similar to neighborhoods like Lakeview." Easy access to popular restaurants and public facilities also draws potential homeowners.

Midcentury and early 1900s homes have modern upgrades

Lots are snugly placed, with the largest among them rarely reaching a quarter of an acre. Backyards end in alleyways with garages, sheds and other outbuildings. Residential zones are connected to local institutions and downtown with a thorough grid of sidewalks, adding walkability to the neighborhood. Turn-of-the-century bungalows and American Foursquares are popular in the area, though midcentury Cape Cods and ranch-style houses are also prominent. Homes are typically well-maintained and feature modern HVAC systems and plumbing upgrades. Depending on condition and amenities, houses usually sell between $190,000 and $330,000.

A SMHS teacher was honored nationally for excellence in education

Students can begin at Rawson Elementary, which has a B-minus from Niche, before heading to South Milwaukee Middle School, which has a C. Students from the middle school earned recognition from NASA through the TechRise Student Challenge, where they successfully designed and built a temperature sensor to monitor air pollution. Older students will attend South Milwaukee High School, which has a B-minus. In 2024, one of the school's English teachers was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame. Wisconsin's open enrollment policy permits students to apply for admission to public schools outside of their designated home district.

Oak Leaf Trail and Grant Park offer nature and recreation

Oak Creek and its tree-lined banks pass through the center of M District. Following beside it is a branch of the Oak Leaf Trail. This 125-mile multiuse path meanders from one side of Milwaukee to another, with picturesque foliage and beer gardens along the way. Roughly 2 miles away, Grant Park spans 400 acres and features a Lake Michigan beach, a public golf course and a wooded 2-mile trail. It is the oldest park in Milwaukee County. The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center hosts dozens of traveling acts yearly, including musicals, dance performances and rock bands.

Local pubs, markets and grocery stores serve the community

Locals head to shopping centers like Marquette Plaza for necessities, often visiting the Aldi off State Route 32 for groceries. The Tap Room has a classic sports bar atmosphere, with football on the TV and local beers on the menu. Established in 1995, Moran's Pub has been a family owned establishment for three generations. Locals visit for any number of its special events, including a week-long St. Patrick's Day celebration. The South Milwaukee Downtown Market takes place every Thursday from May through October, featuring vendors like local farms, bakeries, and crafters.

Heritage Days brings concerts, art and parades each summer

Held annually during the summer, South Milwaukee Heritage Days includes a week of events like concerts, an art fair, a golf tournament, a brat fry and a parade.

Bus service and highway access connect to downtown Milwaukee

The nearest highway is State Route 32, which is dotted with bus stops serviced by the Milwaukee County Transit System. Downtown Milwaukee is about 10 miles away via Interstate 794.

Multiple houses of worship are in the neighborhood

M District is home to multiple houses of worship, including Masjid Al-Huda Mosque South Milwaukee Campus and The Vine Community Church.
