South Pasadena

Waterfront views from condos and ranch-style homes
“This is a very eclectic neighborhood with lots of different choices,” says local Realtor Denise Hobbs with Future Home Realty. “There isn’t much on the market, but when people buy here, they tend to stick around for a while.” South Pasadena contains ranch-styles and Spanish Revivals built in the 1950s and the latest residential developments, with plenty of condos, townhouses and some single-family options. Homes in this neighborhood start in the $200,000s for 2-bedroom condos in a great location, with prices increasing to the $700,000s for 3-bedroom stand-alone homes with a front yard and a garage.Local seafood and a family-owned winery
For a local delicacy, Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish offers Spanish mackerel smoked over smoldering red oak, a tree that is native to the area. Fried shrimp and clam chowder can be found at Leverock’s Great Seafood, which has the quintessential seafood smorgasbord. For groceries, the Walmart Neighborhood Market and the Publix Super Market are on the northern edge of the neighborhood at the Pasadena Shopping Center.A night out on the town in this neighborhood may include throwing a strike at Ten Pin Lanes, a bowling alley with affordable games and a full bar. For a relaxing evening, residents head to Florida Orange Groves Winery, a third-generation, family-owned winery that produces 43 different flavors made from berries or tropical fruit, including Key Lime and Mango Mamma.
Island getaways, nature preserves and boating excursions
There is no shortage of hidden coves, island getaways or area wildlife to explore. Residents can take a boat to Cat Island, a small stand-alone isle between St. Pete Beach and South Pasadena for a romantic date. At Fred Held South Pasadena Habitat, they can find a peaceful trail by the water or sit on a park bench to watch the dolphins. At Maynard A. Duryea Bay View Park, stroll down another bayside path, climb the monkey bars on the playground or serve up an ace at the tennis courts. For a way to get around or to have maritime fun, the Pasadena Marina is a great place to dock the boat or set sail on open waters. South Pasadena is bordered by Boca Ciega Bay Aquatic Preserve, allowing observers to see ocean wildlife frequently. Beach bums can also take the Pasadena Avenue bridge one mile to St. Pete Beach, where a long winding boardwalk off the coast stretches up through the gulf.
Ferry rides and easy drives
To get across town, the SunRunner transit system runs throughout the St. Petersburg area, reaching the business districts, the downtown and St. Pete Beach. The Cross Bay Ferry carries passengers from South Pasadena to the islands daily. Residents can take Route 693 across the water to St. Pete Beach or north toward Clearwater. Turning right onto Highway 19 takes traffic east to downtown and connects to Interstate 275 toward Tampa.Oceanic academics
Students may attend Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School, which has an overall Niche grade of A-minus with a low student-teacher ratio. Azalea Middle School, just north of South Pasadena and next to Walter Fuller Park, has a C-grade and a diversity score of A. Boca Ciega High School receives an overall score of A-minus with college prep courses, extracurricular activities and diversity in its highest attributes.
