This tiny South Portland enclave of cozy homes and cul-de-sacs is flanked by a major city golf course to the east and one of Maine’s primary interstates to the west.
The Country Gardens neighborhood is, above all else, a residential area. Because of its relative proximity to the oil tanks of South Portland’s working waterfront, the home prices here are a bit lower than in some of the city’s other neighborhoods, like the super-hot Willard area.
But because South Portland is so sought-after, many buyers are okay with making that trade, Sarah Delisle, associate broker with Portside Real Estate Group, said -- even if that means living close to industry.
“People in South Portland seem to accept that’s part of living there,” Delisle said. “They want to be in the general area, and they’re willing to sacrifice to be in South Portland.”
Country Gardens’ streets are forested, side walked and filled with a variety of homes with substantial front and back lawns. A raised ranch with a woodsy backyard can cost around $230,000, a cute Cape Cod can go for about $500,000, a raised ranch estate with an extensive backyard is about $650,000 and an adorable, 1970s one-story home goes for $400,000.
Country Gardens straddles the South Portland Municipal Golf Course, a nine-hole, city-owned course that’s open from April through October. The course is fun and low stress enough for new golfers and senior citizens to enjoy, but also challenging enough for more experienced players.
The neighborhood is also less than five minutes away from the Maine Mall, the largest indoor shopping center in the state. Like most malls built in the mid-20th century, the Maine Mall is a bit dated, but there are still plenty of indoor tenants, as well as big names like Ulta Beauty, the Home Depot and OTTO pizza in freestanding outdoor locations. Sea Dog Brewing Co., a local beer maker known for its silly dog in a hat logo and variety of brews, also has a location nearby.
School-aged children in Country Gardens are assigned to Dr. Waldo T. Skillin Elementary School, a South Portland public school with about 357 students. The South Portland School Department is currently constructing a new middle school to combine its two existing institutions, and all high school-aged kids attend South Portland High School, which has a student population of just under 1,000. On the weekends, kids can play at Sawyer Park, the city’s newest park in nearby Thornton Heights. It has a small playground and a gravel path and is the future site of a community garden.
Country Gardens boasts easy highway access – its northern border is I-295, and the Maine Turnpike Approach and Route 1 hug the neighborhood on its southern end. It’s easy to go south to Kittery or north to Augusta from the neighborhood – or even just over the bridge to Portland for some of the best food New England has to offer.
