South Portsmouth has plenty of indoor and outdoor recreation spots to explore, making it convenient for Stanwood Park residents to exercise or have fun. Avid golfers can head south to play a round of golf at Purpoodock Club, which has an 18-hole course, a restaurant and several social events per year. Members can also join tournaments or enroll in golf programs to help them improve their skills. Winnick Woods spans 71 acres and is made up of wetlands, ponds, meadows and woodland. It has nearly 2 miles of trails where visitors can wander over wooden bridges and catch sight of an array of Maine wildlife. “There are great trails,” Britten says. “It’s very dog- and family-friendly. Hinckley Park is a great dog park nearby.” Though not a traditional dog park, Hinckley Park has trails, ponds and plenty of space for dogs to run, play and swim.
The South Portland Recreational Center is very important to the area and provides ample resources to locals and visitors alike. “The rec center is one of the best in the state,” Britten says. The center has a gym with two basketball courts, a 25-meter pool, an art room and an aerobics room. The South Portland Library is about 1 mile northeast on Broadway Street and hosts several events for children and adults. Locals can attend author readings, join book and knitting clubs, or just gather to relax, read or study.
