Hinckley Park is a great dog park nearby.” Though not a traditional dog park, Hinckley Park has trails, ponds and plenty of space for dogs to run, play and swim.The South Portland Recreational Center is very important to the area and provides ample resources to locals and visitors alike. “The rec center is one of the best in the state,” Britten says. The center has a gym with two basketball courts, a 25-meter pool, an art room and an aerobics room. The South Portland Library is about 1 mile northeast on Broadway Street and hosts several events for children and adults. Locals can attend author readings, join book and knitting clubs, or just gather to relax, read or study.
Drives to north downtown Portland and south to Scarborough
Stanwood Park is about 4 miles south of downtown Portland, which commuters can reach by driving about 15 minutes on Route 77. For those who use public transportation, bus routes run all along Highland Avenue, which also takes residents into downtown Portland. Drivers can head south on Highland Avenue for about 5 miles to get to Scarborough. The Portland International Jetport is only a few miles north for weekends away, and the nearest hospital is MaineHealth Maine Medical Center downtown.
