Quiet residential streets near golf courses, grocery stores and shopping malls

Stanwood Park is a quiet residential neighborhood in South Portland that combines suburban living with urban accessibility and allows residents to leave the city's hustle behind. Though it may be a peaceful escape, the community is near various amenities, including the South Portland Recreational Center, major grocery stores, hiking trails and parks. “It’s mainly residential, but it’s located in one of the best places to live in the state,” says Nate Britten, a lifetime local of South Portland. “Stanwood Park is close to everything.” Downtown Portland, the airport and nearby medical centers are less than 20 minutes away, so commuters and locals can easily reach major urban areas. The CAP Index Score is a 2 out of 10, which is significantly lower than the national average of 4.

In Stanwood Park, single-family homes sit at the ends of quiet cul-de-sacs or are hidden on forested lots surrounded by mature trees. Narrow sidewalks run along some neighborhood streets, allowing pedestrians and children to bike and walk around. New England styles like colonial mansions, modest Cape Cods and renovated farmhouses create a timeless feel, though many houses were built between 1940 and 1970. Depending on their size and location, homes most often range between $450,000 and $750,000. However, large estates on wide lots with winding driveways and four or more bedrooms can cost between $800,000 and over $1 million.

Condo and townhouse options include attached dwellings, duplexes and a few detached villas. Built between the 1980s and the 2010s, these units can range from two-story floorplans with single-car garages to house-sized units with two-car storage. Many have been updated to include modern appliances, patios, decks and hardwood floors. Units can range between $350,000 and $700,000.

It has nearly 2 miles of trails where visitors can wander over wooden bridges and catch sight of an array of Maine wildlife. “There are great trails,” Britten says. “It’s very dog- and family-friendly. Hinckley Park is a great dog park nearby.” Though not a traditional dog park, Hinckley Park has trails, ponds and plenty of space for dogs to run, play and swim.

The South Portland Recreational Center is very important to the area and provides ample resources to locals and visitors alike. “The rec center is one of the best in the state,” Britten says. The center has a gym with two basketball courts, a 25-meter pool, an art room and an aerobics room. The South Portland Library is about 1 mile northeast on Broadway Street and hosts several events for children and adults. Locals can attend author readings, join book and knitting clubs, or just gather to relax, read or study.
