The community of Woolsey has a reputation for friendliness that dates back to 1861, when local lore tells of Union Army Col. John Rice being left for dead, only to be nursed back to health by a Confederate soldier and local, Amos Benson. While circumstances are not nearly so dire today, Woolsey is still a welcoming community that has opened its proverbial arms to newcomers seeking a rural escape from the chaos of frenzied urban centers. Woolsey still showcases meandering country roads that cut through thick foliage before opening onto bucolic meadows and rolling hills. But like much of Prince William County, east-to-west migrations in the 1980s and 2000s have brought new homes—and residents—to live amongst the historic working farms and locally owned businesses that dot the countryside. "Woolsey offers a unique option for people wanting to leave the DC area for a rural lifestyle because there's a mix of older homes with lower price points, as well as large, luxury homes, so you can really choose how you want to live," says Natalie McArtor, an Associate Broker with Samson Properties and a Prince William County local. The average list price in Woolsey tips north of $1 million as the market has trended toward luxury home construction in recent years. Homes from the late '70s and '80s offer lower prices with less turnover, but that doesn't mean they're not out there. For $550,000, it's possible to find a 1980s house with modern updates, a private pool, up to five bedrooms and 2,000 to 2,500 square feet of living space—all set on multiple acres with no HOA fees. Or, you might pay closer to $850,000 for a home built in 1976, but renovations, an indoor pool, a 1-acre lot and 3,400 square feet make it a bargain, especially compared to its urban counterparts. For $1 million to $1.5 million or more, you can live large in a recently built Craftsman-style home on 10 acres with six bedrooms, almost 8,000 square feet and state-of-the-art amenities and finishes. Thanks to Prince William County Public Schools, academics are a no-brainer in Woolsey. Students can start at Gravely Elementary before heading to Reagan Middle School, where they can try their hand at anything from drama to art to archery in after-school clubs. Then, at Battlefield High School, football fans unite every Friday in the fall, but future leaders are made every day with solid student leadership programs. Each school earns an A-minus or higher from Niche. Not entirely shed of its rustic roots, you can still grab staples at small businesses like the Wi-Not Convenience Store, located off Sudley Road/Route 234 next to the Sunoco gas station and just down the road from the community post office. But, you'll need to travel 15 minutes or so south on Route 15 to hit the hubs in Haymarket if you're looking for substantial retail. Here, you can grab groceries at Wal-Mart Supercenter or Aldi's, swing by Home Depot for household staples and enjoy dining options galore. HINT: The East Ocean Restaurant provides some of the area's favorite Chinese staples in a cozy dining room, or you can take your goodies to go. Locals also love La Grange Winery, a 20-acre working vineyard set on an 18th-century estate just west of Woolsey. Settle in for a sip at the manor house, but be prepared. This historic site is known for its ghosts, as well as its grapes. Outdoor entertainment, on the other hand, is a Woolsey specialty. Bull Run Golf Club in the neighborhood's northwest corner is one of many golf courses in Prince William County. However, as a public course, it offers a premier golfing experience that's more affordable and accessible than many private clubs, with stunning views to boot. Next, head east to the Catharpin Recreational Park for lighted baseball and softball diamonds, batting cages, soccer fields and the latest addition—a 7,200 square-foot playground with swings, climbing structures, slides and, most importantly, shaded seating for tired parents. Last but not least, if you want to try a different take on a staycation, the Greenville Farm Family Campgrounds is a 200-acre eco-friendly working farm where you can roam the farm, see the animals and create camping memories with the whole family.
