East Southington

Homes lined with trees and sizable yards
While split-levels and Cape Cods can be found in East Southington, colonials and ranch homes are the most common architectural styles in the neighborhood. Properties are primarily situated on residential streets and cul-de-sacs, some lined with trees and sidewalks, and can have more land due to the suburban surroundings. Single-family residences typically range from $200,000 to $500,000, mostly for ranch homes, though more colonials have sold for up to $700,000. Occasional properties have also been priced at $800,000 or more. “Prices depend on the neighborhood,” Egan says. “The newer stuff tends to be colonials, and some of the inventory that’s more from the 1960s and 1970s are raised ranches and ranch homes.” Manicured lawns and attached garages are among the features that can be found with higher-priced homes. East Southington’s CAP crime score is a 3 out of 10, below the national average of 4.B-plus schools serve neighborhood students
Students can begin their education at Flanders Elementary School, located near the center of the neighborhood. Flanders scores a B-plus with Niche, and graduates can then move on to Joseph A. DePaolo Middle School, which also receives a B-plus. Southington High School completes the academic journey for East Southington enrollment, garnering a B-plus and ranking as one of Niche’s 15 best high schools for athletes statewide. Sports there include ice hockey, field hockey and lacrosse.Outdoor preserves, parks and trails
East Southington morphs into the Ragged Mountain Memorial Preserve as it expands to the northeast, along with the Shuttle Meadow and Wassel Reservoirs. Visitors can walk the trails or fish at either body of water, or head to the preserve to trek along a network of trails, go mountain biking or visit the summit of the mountain on its nearly 1,000 acres of land. Sunset Rock State Park also serves as conservational land near Crescent Lake. Near the center of the neighborhood, Veterans Memorial Park has courts for tennis and basketball, as well as a pool and baseball fields, and golfers can take to the links at both Hawks Landing Country Club and Southington Country Club. “There’s a bunch of country clubs for golf and tennis,” Egan says. “The area has its own YMCA, and there’s a bunch of recreational parks and Little League fields.” Walkers and bikers can take to the Southington Linear Trail, while four-legged friends can frolic at a dog park in the downtown section.Amusement rides and apple harvests
Thrill-seekers can jump on one of several roller coasters at Lake Compounce Water & Amusement Park, the oldest continuously-running such venue in the country. The park also offers bumper cars, a number of water-themed rides like log flumes and rapids and several dozen other options for attendees. Organic attractions, like Rogers Orchards, are also vital to the area. “There’s a lot of orchards,” Egan says. “Southington is called Apple Valley, and they always have a Southington Apple Harvest Festival. They do showcases and have parades.” The festival is set amid the trees’ fall colors, attracts a number of tourists and features live entertainment, arts and crafts displays, games and more. “It’s like a community,” Egan says. “They’ll get the fire trucks out, have a parade and it opens the harvest season.”Specialty restaurants and apple orchards
Rogers Orchards is also open seasonally for visitors to pick their own apples, located on the other side of Long Bottom Road from the Shuttle Meadow Reservoir, or they can pick some up from the market itself. In the northern part of the neighborhood, Queen Street is where many outlets can be found. “That has a predominance of a lot of dining and shopping,” Egan says. “It’s a state road, but it has a lot of commercial places. There’s a ton to choose from – there really is.” Stops along Queen include Wood-n-Tap, which offers American fare with TVs and craft beers, Fancy Bagels Inc. and the nearby Noble Japanese Steak House. “J. Timothy’s Taverne is known for its wings,” Egan says. “That’s definitely a place people tend to travel for.” Transcend Beer Crafters and the Long View Ciderhouse Orchard Bar are also located in East Southington. Cava, an Italian restaurant separate from the national chain, is on West Street. “It has a great atmosphere,” Egan says. “They’ll do themes like Harry Potter and decorate the restaurant for that, Christmas and other things.” Groceries and more expansive shopping can be found at neighborhood Walmart, Price Chopper and Stop & Shop locations.Interstate 84 along the west side
Interstate 84, also known as the Yankee Expressway, makes up the western edge of East Southington. It spans four New England states and has major Connecticut junctions in areas like Hartford, which is just under 20 miles away. “84 and 691 are major roads that can get you across the whole state,” Egan says. “On 84, you can continue on to the eastern part of the state or Rhode Island. Or, if you head west, you can get to Danbury and New York. There’s easy access from Southington.” CT Transit operates buses in the Southington area, and since the downtown area is encircled by East Southington, that area is never far away.
