A legendary amusement park in Connecticut
For nearly 180 years, Lake Compounce Amusement & Water Park has operated in the northwestern corner of West Southington. Situated outside West Hartford in central Connecticut, the neighborhood’s claim to fame is the park, which opened in 1846 and stands as the United States’ oldest theme park; not only that, but it’s among the five oldest amusement parks in the world. “It’s a huge draw,” says Dawn Gagliardi, the team leader of the Gagliardi Team at SERHANT CT. “It’s very accessible for families and younger kids. It’s popular.” That accessibility can be credited to its wide array of rides, which range from classic, throwback wooden roller coasters to more elaborate contraptions. When the park is open, the air is filled with the cheers of thrill-seekers on the coasters, the smell of park food from its restaurants, music from its carousel and more. The water park is seasonally open, so attendees take to its slides and pools to cool off during the hotter months.
Lake Compounce is only about 4 miles away from most parts of West Southington, but it isn’t the only thing convenient for residents. “No matter where you’re going, there are a lot of very positive things in terms of commuting, shopping and living,” says Bob LaPerla, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England. “It’s a great community.” With Interstate 84 running along its eastern side, several stores along the route and Hartford around 20 miles away to the east, residents have convenience to much of north-central Connecticut.

Some colonials are priced in that range as well, but larger varieties, as well as newer properties, often sell for between $700,000 and as high as around $1 million. A sporting giant’s headquarters on the north side
Lake Compounce Amusement & Water Park covers most bases, serving as a hybrid amusement complex and water park. “They seem to have done very well over the last couple decades,” LaPerla says. “They bring a lot of people during the summer.” Close by, ESPN’s headquarters straddle the northern boundary of the neighborhood. The complex, based in the Southington and Bristol areas, spans over 100 acres. Tours of the grounds and complex aren’t currently offered, but sports fans can see the logo sign from the road. Hidden Valley Miniature Golf & Waterfront Grille also sits in the northern part of the neighborhood.

Catching primetime games and visiting malls
Sports fans catch live games at Jerzie Joe’s Sports Bar & Grill, a local spot noted for its happy hour and buffalo wings, and Cava dishes out upscale Italian fare and even has a sunroom. “Southington has a ton of restaurants and shopping,” LaPerla says. “There’s strip malls and there’s like a million fast food places there.” A Stop & Shop sits about 3 miles east of some of West Southington’s residential areas, and a Target is located close to the highway. Westfarms Mall, one of the largest shopping complexes in the state, sits around 15 miles from West Southington. Southington is also less than 10 miles north of Cheshire. “Southington abuts Cheshire, which has a tremendous amount of excellent restaurants,” LaPerla says.

Trailheads in the central Connecticut wilderness
Hikers take to the trails at Compounce Mountain and Julian’s Rock Loop, which offer vistas of the surrounding landscape as well as a cascading waterfall. A trailhead for the Tunxis Trail is located in West Southington, as well, which provides access to the nearly-80-mile network of pathways in the Connecticut Valley. There’s other trailheads farther south as well, as much of the western side of the neighborhood is part of a large swath of wilderness. The Highland Golf Range is open seasonally, and just east of the neighborhood Hawk’s Landing Country Club offers an 18-hole course, driving range and instructional programs. The club also hosts events like weddings on its grounds.

An eastern boundary lined with Interstate 84
Interstate 84 runs along the entire eastern side of West Southington. In its entirety, it stretches through parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts for a total distance of over 230 miles. “It’s conveniently located in between 84 and heading towards Interstate 91,” LaPerla says, “and 691 is the cut-through road.” 691 runs for just under 9 miles and links the two main highways. “Southington is nice as well because you’re a little further west in the state,” LaPerla says. “You’re getting closer to New York.” Central Hartford is around 20 miles to the northeast. New York City itself is over 100 miles away, as is Boston.
