Preserving rural living 45 minutes from Miami

Southwest Ranches, 45 minutes from Miami, seeks to preserve its rural lifestyle. The municipality was incorporated into Boward County in 2000 to halt encroaching development. “Southwest Ranches is made to be an equestrian community,” says Heidi Lequerique, a broker with Real Estate Boutique of So Fla who has been in real estate for 20 years. “People move here for the land size, the schools and to have a more rural lifestyle.” Reflecting the larger mission of the town, Southwest Ranches is composed solely of open residential and agricultural spaces. The acres of land stretch between homes, giving residents plenty of room for recreation, livestock and more. No sidewalks decorate the roadsides, only endless manicured lawns divided by fences and trees. There are a few gated communities in the area run by a HOA; however, homes not in these locations still follow the community guidelines that help to preserve this rural location. These community guidelines dictate the use of outside lighting, fireworks, noise levels and home elevation. “Everyone keeps the integrity of the area, even though much of it isn’t under a homeowners association,” says Lequerique.

Akai Estates brings new construction

Sprawling contemporary ranches and prairie-style homes account for most single-family styles in the neighborhood. Some multi-floor residences and Spanish Revivals can be found as well. Homes range in price from $1.3 million to $4 million. Large homes with an acre or more go for $2 million to $7 million. The Akai Estates community is being built off of FL-818. The community consists of large mid-century modern prairie-style homes accented with wood paneling. Homes in this area go from $10 million to $12 million.

Coquina Shopping Plaza and Bergeron Plaza

While there are only a few commercial areas in Southwest Ranches, options are just a few miles beyond its borders. Less than a mile south is the Coquina Shopping Plaza, where residents can grab groceries from Publix. Nearby, Bergeron Plaza houses Casserola Market, a local Venezuelan eatery.

Equestrian trails and pastures

Southwest Ranches contains more than 13 plant nurseries and is home to five parks. Rolling Oaks Park contains riding trails and pastures. Residents may rent out the on-site barn or visit the butterfly garden. Steven L. Josias Dog & Equestrian Park provides riding trails along with gazebos, paddocks and a dog area with water bowls for thirsty pups. Visitors to Perfect Choice Nursery, a family-owned conservatory, may spot some wildlife in the form of an orange tabby cat who can be found perusing the flower beds and taking naps in gardening equipment.

Southwest Ranches Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday at the Southwest Meadows Sanctuary, a green area used for town events, vendors set up shop to sell fresh produce, grass-fed meats and other artisanal goods at the Southwest Ranches Farmer’s Market. This pop-up has been operating since 2009 and has become a popular option for healthy selections.
