A walkable neighborhood with sizeable homes amidst open green spaces
Wide, walkable and bikeable streets welcome residents of Fernwood, one of Spartanburg’s most desirable neighborhoods. The area has a friendly, suburban feel amidst plentiful amenities with big cities nowhere in sight. When local students aren’t in class at one of the highly rated local schools, they’re spending time outdoors in one of the many green spaces that populate Fernwood. Frequented shops and restaurants on the Spartanburg’s east side are also a popular draw. Those looking for sizeable, established homes with ample yard space take an interest in this neighborhood. The Spartanburg bus system takes care of transportation needs beyond the walkable areas.

Fernwood has a vibrant outdoor recreation scene
Fernwood's name is apt, considering what folks have available in their back yard. “One of the biggest benefits of living in Fernwood is the Cottonwood Trail,” says Realtor Francie Little of Coldwell Banker Caine. “You can find an access point off Beechwood Drive and go for a walk, run or bike ride.” The northern access point to the trail is just off Emory Road, affording locals the luxury of walking out their front door to a destination that draws visitors from greater Spartanburg. The 1.25-mile trail winds along Lawson’s Fork Creek and through part of the Edwin Griffin Nature Preserve, allowing for a retreat from urban life. The Preserve is easily reachable on foot from the southeast end of the neighborhood. Birdwatchers thrive in this environment just as much as the birds do; the surrounding wetlands and wooded areas are home to dozens of species.
Cyclists enjoy biking on various paved trails throughout Fernwood.

Established homes in demand
Sturdy brick houses on half-acre lots appeal to buyers looking to put down roots. Homes come in a range of styles, including ranch and new traditional. Colonial Revivals with double-decker porches provide more extensive options. Prices for these homes typically span from $350,000 to $600,000, with a handful of newer builds appearing as well. “You get more bang for your buck here because of the yard size and the condition and size of the houses,” says Realtor Marshall Jordan of Coldwell Banker Caine, a longtime Fernwood resident. Regardless of what buyers want, they’ll have to act fast in this neighborhood. “If you do happen to find a house on the market there, it will have multiple offers and be gone in a day,” Little said. It’s no surprise that demand is high, with the median single-family price of $352,500 falling below the national average.

High marks for Spartanburg School District Seven
Students can attend Pine Street Elementary School, rated A overall by Niche. The school opened in 1929, and nearly a century later, it features a robust fine arts program with ballet and jazz courses. Students can build upon those skills in one of the various clubs at McCracken Middle School, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Rounding out the list with the same grade is Spartanburg High School, which opened an innovative new campus in 2019. Students benefit from an outdoor classroom and a fine arts center.

Grabbing groceries or a quick bite at the shopping center
Residents need not venture far to find dining. Among one of the standout restaurants is Taco Dog, which Jordan says “is very popular with kids and adults alike. It’s an American-taco fusion restaurant serving hot dogs and tacos and is a real asset to the area.” Another local staple is the Boston Pizzeria, where regulars and the owners know each other by name. Grocers are also close by. “You’re within walking distance to Fresh Market, and there’s the Hillcrest Shopping Center nearby, which has a Publix,” says Little. The shopping center sits next to Fernwood, along East Main Street, and can serve as a one-stop shop for clothes, entertainment and everyday essentials.
