Hillbrook
A residential remove east of Spartanburg
The commercial landscape of Spartanburg recedes when entering Hillbrook, which is made up of about 2.5 miles. “There’s a mix of ranch-style houses and split-levels,” Jordan says. “They’re older homes, mostly ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, but they were built well, so they’re in high demand.” There are a few splashes of new Modern Traditional constructions mixed in, but they are few and far between. A four-bedroom ranch-style house built in 1975 prices around $275,000, while the price for a four-bedroom split-level built in 1966 begins at $375,000. More uncommon new construction in the Modern Traditional style begins around $540,000. Lot sizes are generous, so there is space in yards for gardening and recreation beneath towering oak trees. There is a small lake sitting in the center of the neighborhood, so waterfront views are available, but these come at a premium. “There’s a lack of inventory that has really upped demand,” Jordan says. “If they’re priced right, houses can sell in as little as two days.”Scholarship in Spartanburg
Students in Hillbrook are zoned for Jesse Boyd Elementary School, which Niche scores an A. Jesse Boyd is an authorized International Baccalaureate World School that offers Odyssey programs for young learners and an afterschool chess club. They can then move to McCracken Middle School, which earns an A-minus and features wrestling, basketball, volleyball and cheerleading in its athletics program. They finish at Spartanburg High School, also rated A-minus, where they can participate in any of over 30 extracurricular clubs and activities like the Cyber-Patriot Club, created by the Air Force to inspire students towards careers in cybersecurity and science.Shopping and savoring in South Carolina
Hillbrook residents have convenient access to East Main Street, where they can get all their shopping done in one fell swoop. There’s Walmart for any big-box needs, Home Depot and Lowe’s for home improvement necessities and Publix for groceries. East Main Street is also lined with restaurants suitable for a quick lunch or a night out. “My kids love Taco Dog,” Jordan says. “They do your standard Tex-Mex, but also burgers and hot dogs. They’ve been around for a couple of decades, since 2003.” Just 5 miles away in downtown Spartanburg, Cribb’s Kitchen on Main is a point of local pride. The Cribb family has been in South Carolina for more than 300 years, and Chef William Cribb’s menu offers a hearty American selection, including patty melts and fried green tomatoes.
Getting around Hub City
Residents of Hillbrook live on the eastern edge of Spartanburg, which sits on the conflux of two major interstates. “Spartanburg is known as The Hub City,” Jordan says. “Interstate 26 runs north and south, and Interstate 85 runs east and west., and they meet right here.” Heading west 25 miles on I-85 will bring locals to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.Spartanburg’s Partners for Active Living
Most streets in Hillbrook do not have sidewalks, so neighbors are more likely to run into each other at the pool or the Little League field. Locals swim laps in the Olympic-sized pool, which has been a community staple for many generations and is the home of the Hillbrook Dolphins swim team. The team has won the city championship trophy 23 times. Right next door, the Hillbrook Little League field is a draw for families on weekends. Projects are currently underway to develop Spartanburg’s walkability. “The nonprofit Partners for Active Living is currently designing a trail system,” Jordan says. “It’ll be one big web so residents can walk the whole county. It’s pretty ambitious.”
The Criterium and Spring Fling
Partners for Active Living also organizes the annual Criterium, a closed-circuit multi-lap cycling race. “People come from everywhere to compete in the Crit,” Jordan says. The Criterium serves to kick off Spartanburg’s favorite street festival, the Spring Fling. Residents flock to town for the weekend festivities, which include live music, a market full of vendors and local craft beer booths.
America’s pastime in downtown Spartanburg
As of May 2023, downtown Spartanburg will be adding a new stadium. “The city is getting a minor league baseball team,” Jordan explains. “They’ll be an affiliate of the Texas Rangers. It’s an exciting addition.” The team is expected to begin play in Spartanburg as early as 2025.
