Sparkle City's Northside
The Northside in Spartanburg, also known as "Sparkle City", is a mixed-use neighborhood featuring businesses, public spaces and homes, with private Wofford College at its center. The nickname "Hub City" is thanks to the area’s extensive railroad system from the late 19th century. "It does have this small-town vibe," says Rebecca Wallace, a broker for The Pyramid Group with Keller Williams and a resident of Spartanburg County. “But it's growing. The downtown area is undergoing renovations with upgrades and modernization.” A network of local organizations dedicated to the area’s continued development supports the neighborhood. The Northside Development Group is a nonprofit organization that assists in building the community through investments and economic programs for locals. “I’ve seen more growth in five years since the last 45,” says Steve Duncan, manager at the iconic Beacon Drive-In. “We’re just a bunch of down-home friendly people, and the secret seems to be out.” The neighborhood nonprofit, Hub City Roots, manages the local farmers market on Howard Street.

Beacon Drive-In is entangled in Northside's community
Along the roads of Northside are government buildings, service providers and office spaces. For fresh produce and artisan goods, Hub City Farmers Market is less than a mile away at Northside Harvest Park. A handful of restaurants have recently joined the neighborhood. Sully Steamers is a new sandwich shop, and the chain Moe's Original BBQ is a favorite for smokehouse flavors. Locals can pick up coffee or ice cream at Knowledge Perk Coffee Company and Two Scoops next door. However, there are still a few Sparkle City staples hanging around, like the “World Famous” Beacon Drive-In. The beloved restaurant sits on John B. White Boulevard, named after its founder, and was featured on the pilot episode of Guy Fieri’s "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives". “We have a long history with the community here, and everyone has ties to us somehow,” Duncan says. “I would need 50,000 photos to tell our story. We’re the definition of True Americana.” Signature burgers and sandwiches can be ordered “A-Plenty,” which includes a ton of onion rings and fries. The drive-in restaurant’s parking lot hosts bluegrass bands, car shows and, recently, a gathering for a community wide prayer. Within the neighborhood are small convenience stores and shops to source pantry items, like ASC Food Stores & Fresh Seafood. Residents can reach the nearest supermarket, Food Lion, about a mile away.
