Hardworking neighborhood in the East Valley

Trentwood is largely synonymous with aluminum. During World War II, the neighborhood’s Kaiser Aluminum plant produced millions of square feet of the metal and employed hundreds of people. This aluminum went into B-17 bombers and P-51 fighters, two planes that helped America win the war. The plant continued to be prosperous after the end of the conflict, and by 1950, half of the country’s aluminum was produced here and in other nearby plants. The Trentwood plant is still in operation today, and it continues to be an employment base for the area. Other industrial sectors have grown around it, too, centered on Sullivan Road and Trent Avenue. That’s led to an industrious attitude around the neighborhood. “Trentwood is full of underdogs,” says Bryce Els, who grew up in the area and now owns Underdog Pub & Grill. “Some people might’ve grown up on minimum wage, but everybody is motivated and out there working hard."

Spokane Valley homes: new construction and properties across the 1900s

Many neighborhoods in Spokane are experiencing a wave of new construction. Trentwood is one of those neighborhoods, with homes built in the 2010s and 2020s. But, unlike other areas, new homes haven’t taken over. “You have some development on the north side, but that’s pretty much the extent of it,” Els says. “Nobody can really build past there because of the hills and Selkirk Mountains.” The rest of the neighborhood was built any time between the 1890s and 2000s. As a result, boxy homes from the 1910s can be on the same street as ramblers from the 1970s. Ranch-style homes with compact square footage are mostly between $250,000 and $390,000; bigger two-story homes are typically between $400,000 and $780,000.

Free-flowing traffic on Trent Avenue

As with most older neighborhoods in Spokane, Trentwood doesn’t have many sidewalks. Most people drive around here and the wider Valley, and Trent Avenue is a major thoroughfare along the neighborhood’s south side. This road runs parallel to a rail line, and freight trains cause noticeable noise throughout the area. Trent also connects to Sullivan Road and Pines Road, which lead south to Interstate 90. Downtown Spokane is 10 miles west on this freeway, and Lake Couer d’Alene is 25 miles east. Spokane Transit Authority operates its bus system throughout the city, and route 96 stops in Trentwood and Spokane Business & Industrial Park.

Walkable to East Valley Schools

Three schools are central in the neighborhood, clustered along Wellesley Avenue. Trentwood Elementary gets a C from Niche. East Valley Middle and East Valley High are just down the street, across from one another, and they both score a B-minus. The high school had its first state champion for the women’s 400-meter run in 2024. Its football games are well attended, especially when rival West Valley High comes to town. "East Valley High football doesn’t get a lot of kids for tryouts, but we still love the team,” Els says.

Trent Avenue has Underdogs, Lalozy and other local spots

Trent Avenue is known for its industrial businesses, but it also has some local restaurants. Underdogs Sports Pub & Grill is more than a dive bar that serves burgers and pizzas. It’s been around since the early days of Kaiser Aluminum, and it’s had a few different owners. Bryce Els took over the place in 2014, though, and he’s instilled his roots into the building. “I grew up about two blocks away, and I’ve tried to make it a Trentwood pub,” says Els, who painted the exterior green and black in honor of the East Valley Knights. He also put an 8-foot-tall metal knight at the front door. “I want it to be a place where you can come in with your kids before the football games and come in after to celebrate a victory. The school also does a Rabbit Run every year, and we’ve sponsored that race for about a decade.” A half mile west, Lalozy serves coffee, bubble tea and made-from-scratch Asian food. Harvest Foods is between these two restaurants, and it’s the closest grocery store to the neighborhood. This local chain is a bit pricier than bigger stores, so people sometimes travel about 3 miles south to Walmart or Fred Meyer. These grocers are part of a commercial district, centered on Broadway and Sprague avenues; department stores such as Burlington and Kohl’s are nearby.

Kayaking on the Spokane River, rock climbing at Mirabeau Point Park

The Spokane River is a major recreation space for Trentwood and Spokane as a whole. Flowing along the neighborhood’s west side, this river is popular for kayaking and fishing, and Plante’s Ferry Sports Complex is close by on its eastern bank. This green space has 5 baseball fields and 13 soccer fields, and its walking paths connect to the Centennial Trail. This 65-mile route goes from northwest Spokane to Lake Couer d’Alene, Idaho, and people use it for hiking and biking. Mirabeau Point Park is also connected to this trail, a few miles south of Trentwood. Here, flat meadows with paved paths shift into wooded hills with dirt trails. A rock climbing area, with 10-plus trad and sport routes, is south along these trails, and Mirabeau Springs is nearby with a waterfall. For additional open space, the Selkirk Mountains are just north of Trentwood.

Trentwood comes out to Valleyfest

Valleyfest started in the 1990s, and it’s been a September tradition since then. This weekend festival celebrates the Spokane Valley with food, music and vendors, and community volunteers help with setup. On Friday night, the Hearts of Gold Parade cruises down Sprague Avenue, and Mirabeau Point Park fills with crowds on Saturday and Sunday.
