A small outdoorsy community
Life in the strongly connected community of Spring Grove is packed with events and activities. "It's a small community with a small-town feel," says Bob Wisdom, a Realtor at RE/MAX Horizons. Including Bob's wife, Lisa, Team Wisdom has ranked in the top 1% nationally for sales and, since 2000, has been in RE/MAX's top 20 in northern Illinois. Close to lakes and nature preserves, Spring Grove is a place where there’s always somewhere to go to enjoy the outdoors.
Gander Mountain, Elizabeth Lake and community parks
There are lots of places to enjoy the outdoors. From a small community park like Thelen Park, where kids can enjoy the playground, to Lyle C. Thomas Memorial Park, a launching spot for travel down Nippersink Creek Canoe Trail. There are hundreds of acres to explore at Gander Mountain Forest Preserve or Elizabeth Lake Nature Preserve. The trail at Elizabeth Lake is ideal for a serene walk along wetlands, which include a bog, marsh and pond.
Even vaster is Glacial Park Conservation Area, a 3,400-acre site with mixed terrain and glacial landforms. Chain O' Lakes State Park and the series of connected lakes are to the east. There are endless activities on or by the water, including swimming, boating and fishing. It's a 30-mile trip east to reach Illinois Beach State Park, set beside the fifth largest lake in the world, Lake Michigan.
North of Spring Grove is Gander Mountain Forest Preserve, which features miles of hiking paths.

Custom-homes and large lots
"There are a lot of custom homes; they aren't cookie-cutter," Wisdom says. The amount of space is another plus. "Lots tend to be a little more spread out; they aren't on top of each other." Many come with over an acre of land. The average single-family home in Spring Grove is valued at $400,000 to $520,000.

'Farmtractions,' and other events
There's a good supply of family-friendly events in the area, many of which are planned by the Spring Grove Community Engagement Committee. There's a monthly farmers market from May to October, the Kickoff to Summer in June, a big Fourth of July event with a parade, August's craft beer festival at Hatchery Park and the fire department's steak fry fundraiser. Fall is chock-full with Stade's Farm & Market's Shades of Autumn Festival and Farmtractions Theme Park. The Oktoberfest celebration can't be missed, nor should the Trunk or Treat with a costume contest. When the weather gets chillier, residents will still gather for events like the Merry and Bright in Spring Grove, including a Santa and Mrs. Claus visit and a snowman decorating contest.
And if that's not enough, there's plenty more to do within McHenry County, such as movie nights at Golden Age Cinemas McHenry Outdoor Theater drive-in, and 11 days of July fun at McHenry Fiesta Days, which is attended by 2,500 people each year.
Shops along U.S. Route 12 and McHenry's shops
Most of the retail in Spring Grove is concentrated along U.S. Route 12, with stores, eateries and grocer Jewel-Osco. Midwest Breakfast Co. is an old-fashioned spot for breakfast or lunch. Distinct flavors enrich dishes at Maria's Mexican Grill and Wild Crab Boil. About 3 miles south of Route 12, there's Stade's Farm & Market, which is open end of May through October and offers fresh, local produce, pick-your-own options and seasonal events.
For more variety, Wisdom says residents make a short drive. "They probably go to McHenry for shopping; it's about 10 minutes away." The Shops at Fox River has big-box stores and well-known brands.

Major thoroughfares and the nearby McHenry Metra Station
"It's fairly close to the Wisconsin border, so people like to cross over and go to some of the smaller touristy towns," Wisdom says. The edge of Illinois is about 5 miles north, and the popular recreation destination Lake Geneva is about 10 miles beyond that. Whether residents travel to Milwaukee or Chicago, the trip is about 60 miles. State Route 173 and U.S. Route 12 are major thoroughfares. The McHenry Metra Station, approximately 9 miles south, provides service on the Union Pacific Northwest line. For a big trip, O'Hare International Airport is about 50 miles away.
North of Spring Grove is Gander Mountain Forest Preserve, which features miles of hiking paths.
