Community centered around environmentalism
In Springdale, Pennsylvania, small-town living meets ample outdoor recreation and city access, just 18 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. Along the winding Allegheny River, the cozy borough has a charming downtown district, historical architecture and a close-knit atmosphere. Originally inhabited by the native Shawnee tribe, the community saw gradual growth in the late 1800s with the development of railroad and telegraph lines. Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring and notable environmental activist was born on a homestead in Springdale in 1907, and the preserved historic property still stands today. “Springdale is a close-knit community and is a great place to raise a family,” says Connie Rusek-Lichok, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Realty who lived in Springdale for 50 years. “I raised four kids here and they all ended up meeting their spouses in town. It’s one of those places where people end up staying when they grow up here. It makes for a town where everyone knows their neighbors.”
Springdale Borough was founded in 1906 after breaking off from the township.

Most homes in Springdale were built between the early 1900s and 1950s, with a few newer builds mixed throughout. American foursquares, Cape Cods, workers cottages and Colonial Revivals line the area’s quiet, sidewalk-lined streets, with most homes sitting on small lots of 8,000 square feet or less. While houses sit close together, many properties feature mature trees and greenery, providing a degree of privacy between neighbors. “Prices for homes in Springdale also tend to be more affordable than nearby areas like downtown Pittsburgh and suburbs closer to the city,” says Rusek-Lichok. Fixer uppers and investment properties range from $40,000 to $110,000, while move-in-ready homes can go for $110,000 to $310,000.
