The stomping grounds of Lincoln
A name like Old Aristocracy Hill conjures images of lavish gowns, powdered wigs and possibly even a monocle or two. And while a lot of the area's classic architecture and ambiance remains, the overall atmosphere in this historic neighborhood is one of modern urban living wrapped in a veneer of old-world charm. Located just south of downtown, Old Aristocracy Hill has been the home of many of Illinois's most influential citizens, making it one of Springfield's most historically significant neighborhoods. Potential homeowners are attracted to the area for its convenient central location, lower-than-average housing costs and the chance to walk the same streets as former president Abraham Lincoln.

Historic homes in an urban environment
With a third of the area dedicated to office space, Old Aristocracy Hill offers the same buzzing sense of urban atmosphere found downtown. Condos are a popular option for potential homeowners, with prices falling between the high $30,000s and mid-$100,000s, generally based on size and overall upkeep. Single-family homes are further south, away from the high-traffic streets closer to downtown. Tudor and American Foursquare-style homes are popular and fall between $100,000 and $160,000, depending on size, location and maintenance. Smaller bungalows are also available and generally go for anywhere between the high $70,000s and $90,000s. Though the city plans to remove them in 2026, railroad tracks along 3rd Street can be a source of noise pollution in the neighborhood's western side.

Art exhibits at the Governor's Mansion
The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is four city blocks of preserved 19th-century homes and businesses, including the house where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1844 to 1861 before he moved to Washington, D.C., to serve as president of the United States. Visitors can learn about Honest Abe's domestic life free of charge with tours through the Greek Revival-style home and many surrounding buildings, covering 12 total acres. The northern section of the neighborhood is home to the Illinois Governor's Mansion, an Italianate-style estate built in 1855 that's the official residence of the sitting governor of Illinois. Scheduled tours and exhibitions are available throughout the year. Located less than two miles north in the neighboring community of Enos Park, the Springfield Art Association offers exhibitions, art festivals and classes for all ages in the historic Edwards Place Home, the city's oldest home. "We do tours and unique events like Victorian teas, parlor plays, bourbon tasting and murder mystery dinners around Halloween," says Betsy Dollar, the association’s executive director.

Try the Horseshoe at Boone's
With outdoor seating and a view of the Capitol Building in nearby Vinegar Hill, Boone's serves upscale tavern food with a country-western flair. Those who are particularly hungry can try their specialty, the Horseshoe: a hill of meat and fries on Texas Toast, topped with Monterey cheese sauce or spicy queso. Both downtown and Vinegar Hill are known for their local stores, where one can find specialty items from clocks to secondhand clothes. "There are so many local businesses down there," says Kelci Kuntzi, owner of Venue 1929. "I don't think people fully realize how much there is in this area and how much there is to do." Familiar franchises like JCPenney and County Market are a couple of miles east.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
