Piper Glen
Golf Neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois
Sangamon County 62711
Contemporary Craftsman construction
Clean, modern homes line the winding streets, shaded by the foliage of oaks and other mature copses of greenery. Sidewalks pass neatly manicured front lawns large enough to provide privacy but small enough to still feel personal from the front porch. Double-car driveways lead to two-car garages and side entrances, with some backyards enclosed within wooden picket fencing. Contemporary Craftsman and ranch-style variations make up the lion's share of the houses's design, which tend to become larger and more elaborate surrounding the area's many culs-de-sac. Prices trend from the low $200,000s for smaller homes in the neighborhood's southern end to the low $500,000s for the largest and newest of the bunch. The small community features fewer than 500 houses altogether, and open houses tend to get snatched up quickly. "We're one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Springfield," says Morgan Padget, president of the Piper Glen Homeowners Association. "It isn't hard to get excited about living here."Play 18 holes at Piper Glen Golf Club
Central to the community is Piper Glen Golf and Social Club, a public championship golf course with 18 holes, a driving range, a putting area and a pub. A regular host of Illinois Amateur qualifying events, the course is open to residents and non-residents alike. The Lick Creek Wildlife Preserve offers a 5-mile scenic hiking route through the western arm of Springfield Lake, providing views of wooded hills and local flora. Located in nearby Chatham, the Spartan Sports Park has six baseball diamonds, batting cages and sand volleyball courts. Softball, baseball and volleyball leagues for youth, adults and seniors are in regular rotation here, with annual sign-ups for players and umpires. The best high school in Springfield
Students in Piper Glen are served by the Ball-Chatham Community School District, where they'll begin at Glenwood Elementary before heading to Glenwood Intermediate School, both of which have a B-plus with Niche. "We focus very hard on meeting the needs of our students, no matter their learning level," says Elizabeth Gregurich, a 34-year veteran and principal of Glenwood Intermediate School. "We have so many opportunities for them to explore and learn through collaboration." From there, students will attend Glenwood Middle School, which has a B, before enrolling at Glenwood High School, which has an A-minus. Glenwood High was recently declared the best high school in the Springfield metro area by the U.S. News & World Report. "Our community tends to be closer to retirement age," says Padget. "But more and more families are moving in lately, and they appreciate being so close to such an impressive school district."Rides and entertainment at the Illinois State Fair
Held every summer since 1853, the Illinois State Fair is one of Springfield's most widely attended events, with hundreds of thousands attending yearly. Set on a fairground that covers over 366 acres, the 11-day celebration features classic fair food, rides, exhibitions and live musical acts like Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean.Easy access to Chatham
The neighborhood is just off Illinois Route 4, providing a straightforward path into Downtown Springfield, some 11 miles northeast. The small town of Chatham is 2 miles south, along with the Family Medical Center of Chatham. As one of the city's only golf communities, travel by golf cart is incredibly common, with residents opting to zip around on their carts for quick trips to the club or nearby restaurants.Specialty pizzas at Costelloe's
J.T. Costelloe's Pizza Pub and Grill offers a wide assortment of upscale pub food, sandwich baskets and specialty pizzas. The atmosphere is classic Irish pub style, but they pride themselves on being a family-friendly establishment and even have a kids menu. Just across the street is La Fiesta Chatham, a traditional Mexican restaurant with a full bar and outdoor seating. Both of these restaurants are found just outside the Piper Glen entrance, along with an assortment of retail establishments and a County Market just a mile south. "Pretty much everything you need is on the way into the neighborhood," says Hanauer. "Residents really appreciate that convenience."
