A golf cart community in southern Springfield
Tucked against the westernmost shores of Lake Springfield, Piper Glen is a gated community centered around the Piper Glen Golf and Social Club. "The golf course is Piper Glen's driving force," says Ralph Hanauer, Alderman of Springfield's tenth ward. "It has the only golf-cart-legal streets in the city." The area boasts a great deal of self-containment, with restaurants and retail options found immediately upon reaching the area's entrance. With its modern collection of homes and access to some of the highest-ranking public schools in Springfield, this lakeside neighborhood is a popular choice among well-heeled homeowners looking for a safe, secluded slice of the city.

Contemporary Craftsman construction
Clean, modern homes line the winding streets, shaded by the foliage of oaks and other mature copses of greenery. Sidewalks pass neatly manicured front lawns large enough to provide privacy but small enough to still feel personal from the front porch. Double-car driveways lead to two-car garages and side entrances, with some backyards enclosed within wooden picket fencing. Contemporary Craftsman and ranch-style variations make up the lion's share of the houses's design, which tend to become larger and more elaborate surrounding the area's many culs-de-sac. Prices trend from the low $200,000s for smaller homes in the neighborhood's southern end to the low $500,000s for the largest and newest of the bunch. The small community features fewer than 500 houses altogether, and open houses tend to get snatched up quickly. "We're one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Springfield," says Morgan Padget, president of the Piper Glen Homeowners Association. "It isn't hard to get excited about living here."

The atmosphere is classic Irish pub style, but they pride themselves on being a family-friendly establishment and even have a kids menu. Just across the street is La Fiesta Chatham, a traditional Mexican restaurant with a full bar and outdoor seating. Both of these restaurants are found just outside the Piper Glen entrance, along with an assortment of retail establishments and a County Market just a mile south. "Pretty much everything you need is on the way into the neighborhood," says Hanauer. "Residents really appreciate that convenience."
