Springfield Far East District has many homes and faith community

Springfield Far East District is a mostly residential neighborhood on the Illinois capital’s East side. The neighborhood has added affordable housing over the years, an effort supported by its faith community. The area has several churches and a few charitable groups, one of which runs a neighborhood community garden. Small mom and pop restaurants here also draw many visitors looking to try out barbecue, soul food and fried fish. “We get good traffic here. There are a lot of restaurants and shopping places on this side of town,” says Ray Quattum, owner of Carter’s Fish Market. “We’re basically located in the middle. A mile to the right, you hit the highway [Interstate 55]. On the left side, you hit the downtown area.”

A neighborhood that offers affordability

The Far East area is a dense neighborhood with many mature trees. There are mostly gridded streets with narrow sidewalks, but winding roads are more common on the community’s east end. Houses here include Craftsmen, bungalows, ranch-style homes and gable-ell cottages. The Eastview Estates community on the area’s east side has modern traditional homes. Additionally, the neighborhood offers income-based homes for rent. The ongoing Nehemiah Homes project has added many affordable homes over the years. Homes here go from about $10,000 to $60,000, and several have been listed as investment opportunities. The neighborhood also has a 9 out of 10 on one of the CAP Index Crime Score’s violent crime categories. That score is well above the national average of 4.

Neighborhood is a few blocks from golf and local parks

The Far East community is a few blocks south of Jaycee Park. The 13-acre site has a tree-shaded playground, a small basketball court, a few baseball fields and some open fields used for soccer or football. A narrow walking path also goes around the baseball diamonds. Nearby Comer Cox Park, which spans 6 acres, has additional amenities like a bike skills park and a splash pad. In addition to its playground, there is outdoor workout equipment for older park visitors. The two parks are close to the public Bergen Golf Course, which provides nine holes of play.

Students may attend several Springfield schools

Part of the neighborhood is zoned for Southern View Elementary School, which gets a C-plus from Niche. Students may then go to Franklin Middle School, which receives a B. Some students here may also attend Wilcox Elementary and Washington Middle. Wilcox gets a B-minus, while Washington receives a C. The neighborhood is 1 mile, or less than 5 minutes, north of Southeast High School. The high school gets a B-minus grade. Southeast High’s auditorium hosts the Mr. & Miss. Juneteenth Pageant, one of many events during the city’s annual Juneteenth celebration.

Downtown Springfield festivities are a few miles away

The neighborhood is 2 miles west of downtown Springfield, which hosts several festivities during the year. Old Capitol Art Fair is a more than 60-year-old tradition. Each May, the fair turns the Illinois Old State Capitol area into an outdoor gallery showing a wide range of artwork. Attendees may also grab food and drinks as they listen to live music.

Neighborhood has access to SMTD buses

The Sangamon Mass Transit District has numerous bus stops in the neighborhood. Commuters may take Cook Street to downtown Springfield. Downtown is close to institutions like HSHS St. John’s Hospital. The neighborhood is also 1 mile west of Interstate 55 and 6 miles southeast of Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport. “If you’ve ever been to Springfield, everything’s close together,” says Curtis Bolden, the owner of The Fadeologist, a neighborhood barbershop. “If I was in St. Louis, I’d have to jump on the highway. But not here in Springfield.”

Small local restaurants serve fried fish, soul food and barbecue

Restaurants include Carter’s Fish Market, which serves river caught and pond raised fish brought in from as far as California and Florida. “The magic to it is pretty much our batter,” Quattum says. “It’s our number one thing here. Everybody likes it.” Patrons may also buy the batter and fish separately. PT’s Bar-B-Que runs out of a nearby shack. PT’s mostly rib tips and chopped pork sandwiches, but the chicken sandwiches and traditional ribs are popular, too. Boyd’s New Generation is another dining option here. The casual spot’s home cooked meals include fried fish and chicken. Humphrey’s Market and County Market are the nearest grocery stores.
