A piece of Springfield's history
Just west of Springfield’s downtown, Vinegar Hill is the site of many of the city’s oldest buildings, including the State Capitol and Illinois State Museum. Combined with homes primarily constructed during the turn of the 20th century, this creates an old-world atmosphere not easily attained in other suburbs and surrounding neighborhoods. This community, with its central location and lower real estate prices, attracts would-be renovators and city living fans.

19th-century homes in need of renovation
The neighborhood is dotted with reflections of the city's past, featuring original red brick roads, stately cathedrals, and monuments dedicated to local heroes. Narrow, worn sidewalks follow streets shaded in the canopy of mature trees. Homes tend to be classic designs, with bungalows, Cape Cods and American Foursquares being the most popular. Prices start in the high $10,000s for homes badly needing restoration. Homes that have seen better maintenance and renovation over the years peak in the high $100,000s, which is still well below the state average of $273,000.

Acres of greenery at Washington Park
Erected in 1877, the Illinois State Museum of Springfield offers unique programming, from Illinois-based presidents to local wildlife and fine arts. Admission to the museum is free, with different specialty events and programs available weekly. A mile west, Washington Park is a 150-acre public space filled with wooded areas, lagoons and long stretches of greenery. Built in 1901, the park is featured on the National Register of Historic Places and is equipped with tennis courts, playground equipment and a band pavilion for live performances. Based out of the Edwards Place Historic Home, the Springfield Art Association has offered public galleries, classes, and cultural events since its inception in 1909. “Edwards Place is the oldest house in Springfield on an original foundation, and it has been restored to its former glory,” says Betsy Dollar, executive director of the S.A.A. “We do tours and unique events like Victorian teas, parlor plays, bourbon tasting and murder mystery dinners around Halloween.”

Cultural pride at Springfield High
Students can begin their education at Elizabeth Graham Elementary School with a C-plus rating from Niche. From there, they can attend the B-rated Benjamin Franklin Middle School before enrolling at Springfield High School, which has an A rating and sees more than 80% of its students moving on to college after graduation. Principal Lisa Leardi attributes this track record to a sort of cultural pride. “Our school culture is a positive force that is heavily influenced by the engaged student body and committed staff members,” Leardi says. “SHS is a safe, inclusive and academically challenging high school that prepares students for any college or career choice.”
