A residential suburb with easy access to major roads
The northwestern edge of Springfield city limits is made up of quiet suburbs that enjoy around a 4-mile commute into the heart of the city. Youngston-Holliday Hills, more commonly known as Youngston Hills, stands out from other suburbs because of its nearby parks and easy access to major roads. It is also one of the most affordable choices on the city's west side. The original subdivision covenants read: "No building site shall be used except for residential purposes," — a statement that still rings true today. The neighborhood is a collection of just over 200 single-family homes, duplexes and small apartment blocks, all with a surrounding network of parks and greenery.
Diverse home styles on slow streets
Youngston Hills has a diverse mix of renters and homeowners in a community with a classic suburban feel. Tucked away behind major roads from the rest of the city, there is little through traffic. However, to ensure the roads stay safe, signs read "caution children at play," streetlamps illuminate sidewalks at night, and there is an active neighborhood watch program. "Springfield's more recent growth tends to be on the west side," says Realtor Shelley Berendt with The Real Estate Group, who has over 19 years of experience in the city. "So you get these subdivisions with more modern, up-to-date homes from the seventies up to now." Home styles include ranch, split-level and colonial revival and go for around $170,000 to $250,000. Duplexes are usually ranch-style homes with two attached garages, costing around $120,000. Prices here are on the low side compared to other west-side suburbs.
Direct access to the Sangamon Valley Trail
Youngston Hills is directly connected to the Sangamon Valley Trail, an 11.5-mile paved path for walking and biking. "Access to the bike path is a huge draw because we don't have a lot of those in Springfield," Berendt says. "And it connects from the neighborhood through the whole west side of the city." Using the trail, most homes in the neighborhood are less than a mile from Stuart Park, about a 15-minute walk. The park is best known for its dog-run areas, which are separated for small and large dogs. There's also a playground, a pavilion and a soccer field.
Renovations and support at public schools
Neighborhood kids are zoned for Addams Elementary School, which gets a C-plus rating from Niche. Then it's on to Grant Middle, rated C and Lanphier High, rated C-plus. All three schools offer free breakfasts and lunches for kids of all ages during summer break. Lanphier High completed a $100 million renovation in 2024, opening up a new library, auditorium and other academic facilities to students. The private Springfield Christian School serves kindergarten through eighth grade just a mile south of the neighborhood. The school's reading and math test scores are above average for the state of Springfield.
Bus lines and easy access to major roads
Unlike most other subdivisions west of Veterans Parkway, Youngston Hills is on a bus line. After departing from the entrance to the subdivision, the bus travels 4 miles into downtown Springfield in about 20 minutes. However, the bus takes a more extended route back, so commuters are looking at more like a 35-minute ride home. For those who prefer to drive, the neighborhood's location at the Veterans Parkway and West Jefferson Street intersection makes it possible to travel quickly in all directions. "It's a very convenient spot to be able to jump right on the highway and head even all the way out to Chicago," Berendt says. Along Veterans Parkway, the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is also just 4 miles north.
A garden center and more down Jefferson Street
Although Youngston Hills feels secluded from the rest of the city, shopping and dining options are not too far away. Right across West Jefferson Street, Green View Garden Center has everything needed for indoor and outdoor landscaping. They are a go-to for pumpkins in the fall and hold occasional themed classes like flowerpot painting. Taking West Jefferson further into the city leads past Westwoods Lodge, a rustic hunting-themed restaurant offering Springfield's specialty: the horseshoe sandwich. The sandwich, made of toast and meat smothered in french fries and cheese sauce, fits right in to Westwoods' comfort-food cuisine. A bit farther down the road, Monty's Submarines is a family-owned spot that's been serving up classic subs since 1989. And when it's time for a grocery run, County Market, about 2 miles away, is the closest option.
Road noise and a slight flooding risk
Being located at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and West Jefferson Street means that occasionally, road noise is audible in the neighborhood. However, a buffer of undeveloped land shields the neighborhood from Veterans Parkway, which is the busier of the two roads. In 2013, the land was zoned for a multi-use development called Jefferson Crossing, but the lot still sits empty due to funding complications. In addition to occasional road noise, the north of Youngston Hills is a known floodplain, so homes along its northern edge are at a slight risk of flooding.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
