A sense of community in a tranquil suburb
In Southeast Springfield, though it’s surrounded by bustling shopping centers, Brentwood’s leafy suburban atmosphere is convincing in its ability to seem far from the city. But it's really not, sitting just 4 miles from downtown Springfield. “Brentwood was the neighborhood I’ve always wanted to live in,” says Amy Hunsaker-Williams, a Springfield native and a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who has lived in Brentwood since 2006. “I had friends growing up who lived there and I just really loved the houses. It’s a very mature neighborhood, so it’s got a lot of character as all houses don’t look the same. But also, there’s a lot of great big trees and beautiful leaves in the fall. And it’s a place where there’s a lot of people outside all the time, walking around and talking to neighbors.” That community bond and easygoing lifestyle is also preserved by neighbors who come together for spur-of-the-moment barbecues and yearly neighborhood cleanups that keep Brentwood looking pristine.

From modest ranch-style homes to million-dollar estates
With a traditional suburban experience, Brentwood’s winding streets feature single-family homes, many on quarter-acre lots with tall trees and fenced yards. Brick ranch-style and split-level homes from the 1970s are common in Brentwood, with prices ranging from $250,000 to $350,000. Larger Colonial Revivals with 3,500 to 5,500 square feet of living space sell for anywhere from $400,000 to $650,000. Then there are occasional custom high-end homes, which go for around $700,000 to more than $1 million, depending on the size and interior amenities.

Walking and biking the Galloway Creek Greenway
The neighborhood features a network of trails and green spaces to enhance the existing walkability and to boost bikeable options. The Galloway Creek Greenway starts in Brentwood and runs 5 miles south. It stops at Lone Pine Bike Park, a dirt bike track that was started by a group of local kids, before local organizations pitched in to make it even better. The trail continues south to Sequiota Park, about a mile away in the Sequiota neighborhood, featuring caves that are home to endangered gray bats, stone bridges and a fishing lake right next to a playground. According to Hunsaker-Williams, many people will ride their bikes to Sequiota to grab lunch, especially at Galloway Grill, which is right on the trail. Brentwood has a few parks of its own as well, like Kirkwood Park, which has playground equipment and a large open field, and Eugene Field Park, which is similar and located behind the elementary school. And according to Hunsaker-Williams, many families have memberships to the two community pools: Green Meadows and Southern Hills, She says, “We spend the summers there with the kids playing. And when I say spend the summer there, I mean people are there every night of the week for eight hours on a Saturday.”
Brentwood residents enjoy access to the Galloway Creek Trail.

Three academies at Glendale High
Each public school that serves Brentwood gets a B-grade from Niche. Students attend Eugene Field Elementary, which is conveniently located in the neighborhood. It’s known for being one of the first elementary schools in Missouri to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, and also recently added a $4 million gymnasium-auditorium building. Students go on to Pershing Middle and Glendale High. The high school offers three academies, allowing students to focus on their passions. They include the Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, the Academy of Businesses and Law and the Academy of Technology and Design.
Glendale High School has an average enrollment of approximately 1,400 students.
Field Elementary offers students an International Baccalaureate education opportunity.

Revitalizing old traditions
The Brentwood Neighborhood Association hosts a general meeting every month, typically featuring guest speakers such as the neighborhood’s PAR officer, fire fighters and local representatives. The association also hosts seasonal potlucks and an annual neighborhood cleanup. Meetings and events are typically held at either Unity Church or Schweitzer Brentwood Branch Library. Hunsaker-Williams, who is also a co-chair of the neighborhood association’s social committee, says they are trying to revitalize events as they started to die down after the 1980s. She said she hopes to bring back the holiday parade, and in 2023, they brought back the lantern walk. “The lantern walk was to promote pedestrian safety, and it was so much fun. All the kids had their lanterns and we did a parade through the neighborhood, and everyone came out of their houses and cheered on the walkers.” But along with those annual neighborhood traditions that are being reborn, are fun events completely unplanned. “We’ve done a couple of neighborhood barbecues,” says Hunsaker-Williams. “They’re kind of on our whim, not like a set annual event. They’re more like, ‘we need to have another barbecue!’”

City buses and downtown commutes
City Utilities Transit provides bus routes from the main roads to neighborhoods all over the city. Those heading to Downtown Springfield have a 4-mile drive with a few traffic lights along the way. Brentwood is also just a few miles from Missouri Highway 65, which runs north and west through the state.

A focus on farm-to-table products
Residents are no more than a mile drive from East Sunshine Street and Glenstone Avenue, two main roads with plenty of places to shop and eat. The Brentwood Shopping Center is more than just a collection of stores and restaurants as it embraces the farm-to-table brand with restaurants and weekend farmers markets. Farmers Gastropub, for example, takes pride in gathering ingredients from local farms to serve up its famous fish and chips and other artisan dishes. And that support for local farms comes full circle for the restaurant. Hunsaker-Williams says, “It’s owned by a family that attended Eugene Field Elementary, so a lot of the families in Brentwood try to support their business. And it’s delicious.” Black Sheep is another popular spot, offering innovative burgers and milkshakes with a rustic interior, an outdoor dining area and a drive-thru. Locals can also grab something to eat from the food court at Hy-Vee, a large regional chain grocery store.
