Doling revs up for the future
From an active neighborhood association to weekend car shows on Kearney Street, one of the biggest assets Doling offers is the Midwest neighborly charm. "When I was a teenager, Kearney Street was bumper-to-bumper Friday nights and Saturday nights. Kearney Street died when the city passed an ordinance that cruising wasn’t allowed. Now it’s allowed once a month, and it’s revitalizing that area,” says Bernadean McAfee, owner of McAfee Real Estate Group LLC. Sitting amongst tall, leafy maples in the northern part of Springfield, this mostly residential neighborhood sits right on Interstate 44 for direct access to St. Louis while having amenities just across the road.

Reflections of the housing boom
Doling features many home styles that reflect the population boom of the midcentury, with single-level ranch-style homes, bungalows, and some American traditional foursquare homes making up much of the inventory. Most feature off-street parking, and many also include a garage or carport. As McAfee points out, the value of these older homes depends on how well they’ve been maintained or renovated. Two- and three-bedroom homes generally sell in the range of $100,000 to $175,000, while updated historic homes sporting upgrades like granite countertops, modernized utilities and master suites can fetch $220,000 and up.

Easy access to Springfield and beyond
Well-maintained sidewalks and fairly quiet internal streets help to make Doling walkable and bikeable, although most homes keep at least one car for errands. Public transportation is spotty, with CU Transit’s The Bus services having some stops in Doling. Directly west of Doling, Springfield-Branson National Airport is 7 miles away, generally less than a 15-minute drive. Less than 2 miles south of Doling, Cox North Hospital offers 24-hour emergency care.

Hillcrest Hornets hit homers
Students in Doling are served by the Springfield Public Schools, and there are different feeder patterns from the neighborhood. Some students will attend Watkins or Robberson Elementary School, progressing to Reed Middle School. Others will attend Fremont Elementary, then move on to middle school at Pleasant View Middle School. All three elementary schools are graded C or better by Niche, while both middle schools earn a B-minus. All the students from Doling come together to wrap up their schooling at Hillcrest High School, which earns a C grade from Niche. Hillcrest is known for its baseball program, which was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. Private school options include Dayspring Chistiran School and Greenwood Laboratory School.

Family-owned and local focus
Kearney Street Café gets the day started right with breakfast favorites like cinnamon swirl sandwiches loaded with sausage, eggs and cheese. El Taco, part of the Mexican Villa family of shops across Springfield, has been a fixture on Kearney Stret since the early 1960s. Family-owned, they’ve been serving Tex-Mex favorites up for Doling residents across three generations. Also nearby is Whole Hog Café, an outpost of a small chain dishing out award-winning Memphis-style barbecue including pulled pork, beef brisket, and mouthwatering ribs. Each end of the neighborhood is anchored by a Walmart Supercenter for groceries and daily needs, while the nearby Lowe’s has everything a homeowner needs to maintain their property.

Rebirth of an amusement park
Once home to an amusement park that drew visitors from the famed Route 66, Doling Park is now the community’s central green space. Tall shade trees, covered picnic tables and walking paths surround Doling Lake, while a gym, game room and indoor aquatics center offer recreation. Some of the old park has been reuses – like the old skating rink that has been transformed into the Doling History Museum. More adventurous park goers can explore Giboney Cave but will have to make sure to bring a flashlight and look out for bats. Just north of Doling, at Dickerson Park Zoo is home to animals native to five continents, including black bears, Malayan tigers and maned wolves.

A long running fair for the whole family
Just across U.S. Route 44, Ozark Empire Fairgrounds hosts events all year round, from holiday events to beerfests to state sports championships. The highlight that everyone from Doling goes to is the Ozark Empire Fair, a 10-day fair running annually at the end of July that features nationally touring musicians, bull riding, monster trucks, livestock display, and of course fair food. On a regular basis, locals get together to show off their cars along Kearney Street. “We have cruising night once a month. People bring their classic cars. Others get their chairs, and they line up on the streets," says McAfee.
