Downtown Springfield
Suburban Neighborhood in Springfield, Missouri
Greene County 65806
Renovated lofts and condos
This in-demand neighborhood has few housing options, as Downtown Springfield is mostly commercial, but the recent development of loft housing has enabled residents to live close to the cultural center of the city. One- and two-bedroom condos offer the quintessential loft living experience with prices ranging from $200,000 to $330,000. Units are often built with hardwood floors, authentic exposed brick, high ceilings and open living areas that may include a free-standing fireplace or other enviable indoor appliances.Urban respite at Park Central Square
At the heart of downtown is Park Central Square, an urban plaza surrounded by office buildings, shops, a museum and a theater. The brick-paved square provides respite from the bustling city, featuring a large fountain, trees and abstract sculptures. Founders Park is about two blocks away. The urban space is made entirely of concrete to resemble a quarry and features an amphitheater used for summer concerts. Jordan Valley Park, which has a large grassy field with artistic statues and a water fountain for kids to play in is next to Hammons Field, home of the Springfield Cardinals baseball team, a minor-league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.Dual-credit at Parkview High and STEM education at Discovery School
Public school students attend McGregor Elementary, which earns a C grade from Niche. They’ll go on to Jarrett Middle School and Parkview High School, each of which gets a C-plus. Parkview students have the opportunity to earn dual credit through Missouri State University and the University of Missouri. Missouri State is a half-mile from downtown.Another educational option is the Discovery School, held at the Discovery Center. Just as the museum offers interactive science activities, kindergarten through 12th-grade students in the private school program receive hands-on STEM education.
Downtown museums, events and entertainment venues
The History Museum on the Square displays such exhibits as the Birthplace of Route 66 and Wild Bill’s shootout, the first one-on-one quick draw in the country, which happened right in the square. Discovery Center of Springfield offers seven floors of interactive science exhibits geared toward children. There isn’t a month without a downtown event. In spring, Artsfest on Historic Walnut Street draws in crowds to check out the works of more than 100 artists from around the country. The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival & Car Show rolls around in August. Fall is welcomed with the two-day Cider Days event, where people can enjoy warm cups of Apple Cider while shopping for holiday décor from nationwide vendors. Come winter, Park Central Square fills with people who come to watch the annual Mayor’s Tree Lighting Holiday Show.
At Missouri State University, Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts frequently hosts Broadway shows and touring musicians. “Springfield is too small for Taylor Swift,” says Michael Jacques, a local broker with The Jacques Company, “But if she were to come, that’s where she would perform.” The restored 1920s Gillioz Theatre offers similar events but in a more intimate venue.
City Utilities buses and free parking garages
When people think of downtown living, they often consider the parking situation and their mode of transportation. “We always get a lot of questions about how to get around downtown,” says Magnus. “To that degree, we have several large free parking garages and a City Utilities bus station.” The bus station is less than a half-mile from most condos and lofts. It also has a Greyhound Station for those who want to travel to farther destinations. Springfield-Branson National Airport is also an option. It’s about 8 miles away and offers flights to 15 destinations, including Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles.Early-morning cafes and late-night rooftop bars
Downtown Springfield is full of restaurants, from rooftop and piano bars to high-end steakhouses and coffee shops. The Springfield Brewing Company serves gourmet pub food and seasonal craft beer such as summer’s Tropical Fruit Squeeze and fall’s Mayhem Marzen Oktoberfest Lager. Vantage Rooftop Lounge and Conservatory is where people can hang out late with friends with views from above the city. The dueling pianos at Ernie Biggs draw crowds past midnight. People can also head to Civil Kitchen and eat Southern favorites such as chicken and waffles on the patio in front of Park Central Square. For a more fine-dining experience, Flame Steakhouse & Wine Bar serves high-end steak and seafood with an extensive wine selection. Independent shops also deliver a mixture of experiences in Downtown Springfield, whether to buy records at Stick It In Your Ear, antiques at Queen City Collectors or clothes at Five Pound Apparel, which donates five pounds of food to a local food bank for each branded item sold.7 out of 10 crime score
Downtown Springfield gets a CAP Crime Index Score of 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. Burglary appears to be one of the biggest problems facing downtown, receiving a crime score of 9.
