Affordability and an array of aquarium adventures

In Springfield’s Mark Twain neighborhood, residents can investigate a shipwreck, traverse a swamp and come face-to-face with an octopus while still enjoying the comforts of the city. That’s because Mark Twain is home to the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, a 350,000-square-foot labyrinth of ecosystems and animals named the top aquarium in the nation by USA Today. The aquarium and the neighboring flagship Bass Pro Shops store brings the great outdoors to the doorstep of the community. But these attractions aren’t the only thing that’s bringing people to Mark Twain. “This neighborhood’s centralized location is one of its biggest selling points since residents can easily reach the area’s most-traveled corridors,” says Amy Molea-Koppitz, Realtor and Keller Williams team leader. Those corridors that Molea-Koppitz mentions are Route 13 and Route 60, which are popular for residents.

Affordable ranch-style homes

“Mark Twain is one of the oldest areas of Springfield, and the homes in the community offer competitive prices,” Molea-Koppitz says. Homebuyers will find mostly ranch-styles in Mark Twain. These homes include low-pitched roofs with majority being built between 1950 and 1980. The median sales price in Mark Twain is $258,000, cheaper than many of the surrounding neighborhoods, but prices can vary between $100,000 and $300,000, depending on age and size. Short driveways and two-car garages are a staple of the neighborhood and white oaks line this community’s sidewalks.

Food from Mexican Villa, coffee from El Cafecito

Mark Twain is home to the local casual eatery chain: Mexican Villa. Named one of the top Mexican eateries in the city of Springfield by 417 Magazine, this restaurant doesn’t limit their offerings to just enchiladas or burritos. Instead, specialty items like the Sancho Enchilada Style—a tortilla filled with burrito sauce, beef, cheese and lettuce –smothered in another layer of enchilada sauce. Similar themes can be found at El Cafecito, another local spot brewing up traditional Mexican coffee spiced with cinnamon, as well as sweet, creamy iced churro lattes. For the daily essentials, grocery runs are easy to accomplish here, with both a Hy-Vee Grocery Store and Aldi nearby.

From Flagship Bass Pro Shops to Wonders of Wildlife

Venture around Mark Twain and it's almost impossible to miss the neighborhood’s shrine to the outdoors: the Bass Pro Shops headquarters. Not an average outdoors store, this Bass Pro Shop is nearly half a million square feet of waterfalls, aquariums, taxidermized game, showrooms and even a gun range – and they sell merchandise too. The original Bass Pro store is popular with tourists, but it’s also the go-to spot for many who live in the community. “They’ve got a lot of educational programs there,” Molea-Koppitz says. “I know for sure a lot of homeschool families will get memberships there because there are so many classes for kids. They offer adult classes too. Things like woodburning and charcuterie board making, fun stuff you can do for date nights.” Meanwhile, the live alligators and gars swimming in the Bass Pro ponds are only a warmup for Wonders of Wildlife next door. At the aquarium, visitors can watch rays glide overhead or even elect to climb in a cage and be lowered into a tank of prowling sharks.

From WOLF School to Springfield R-XII School District

Students who aren’t content seeing wildlife from the other side of a glass pane can apply to be a part of the Wonders of the Ozarks Learning Facility, also known as the WOLF School. A partnership between Springfield Public Schools, Wonders of Wildlife and Bass Pro Shops, the WOLF School’s lottery system selects 46 fifth graders annually to join its adventurous outdoor curriculum. Students canoe across bodies of water, hike through forests and explore caves during the school year. Also, in the neighborhood, residents will find the public school that shares its name with the community: Mark Twain Elementary. Named after the famous author who grew up in Missouri (though on the other side of the state), Mark Twain Elementary recently opened a new gym, outfitted with six basketball hoops and a stage. Meanwhile, Jarrett Middle School and Parkview High School are also less than 3 miles away. Mark Twain Elementary, Jarrett Middle and Parkview High all earned C-plus grades from Niche.
