Parkwood a mix of homes and businesses
Despite its name, Parkwood is less of a bucolic setting and more of a business/industrial district in Northeast Springfield with homes and green space sprinkled in.
Pockets of subdivisions are supported by nearby manufacturing plants, corporate offices, retailers and restaurants. But even with some of these enterprises abutting backyards, serenity isn't in short supply.
"My sister-in-law lives there, and she never complained about it," says Rachel Reaves, a Realtor with Smith Realty who also manages property in Parkwood. "They're out in their back yard in the pool during the summertime, and they've never complained about any noise issues."
The Parkwood neighborhood is tucked in the far north east corner of Springfield.
Bordered by Interstate 44, the Parkwood neighborhood is conveniently positioned for a road trip.

Shopping, dining and entertainment on Kearney and Glenstone
The busy main roads of Kearney Street and Glenstone Avenue intersect in Parkwood. Glenstone is lined with more than a dozen hotels and several retailers and restaurants, so it's typical for residents to shop and dine among travelers. In fact, one of the neighborhood's most popular restaurants is in a hotel. Fire & Ice Restaurant & Bar, located in Oasis Hotel & Convention Center, is known for its dry-aged Angus steak and has the only ice bar in Springfield. Echelon Coffee is another well-known spot that serves specialty lattes and pastries. Along with these two local restaurants are dozens of national chains from which to choose. There are also several big box retailers such as Walmart and Aldi for groceries and other essential shopping needs. According to Reaves, the city is working on revamping all of North Springfield. As part of that initiative, Parkwood welcomed BigShots Golf in 2021, where friends and family can eat, drink and hit golf balls at targets on the driving range.
Grocery runs usually end up at the Walmart Supercenter in Parkwood.

Suburban ranch-style homes
Homes in Parkwood are concentrated in one of two residential pockets on the neighborhood's west end. Though just a block from busy main roads, these subdivisions offer a classic suburban atmosphere with single-family homes on quarter-acre lots with shade trees that screen industrial buildings. Ranch-style houses built between the 1940s and 1970s make up nearly all of the neighborhood's homes. They typically have 1,200 to 1,300 square feet of living space, two to three bedrooms and attached two-car garages. These houses sell for around $150,000 to $250,000, compared to Springfield's average home sale price of $223,000.
"It's a good option for anyone looking to buy because you can get a little more value for your money," says Michael Jacques, the broker of The Jacques Co., who services the neighborhood. "It would be nice for some more Parkwood-type subdivisions to spring up here and there because they'd sell like crazy." Homes in Parkwood don't hit the market often, but when they do, they tend to sell fast. Just seven homes were sold between May 2023 and May 2024, lasting an average of 20 days on the market.

Parkwood Park is surrounded by one of the neighborhood's subdivisions, making it easy reach on foot. The park's open grassy field, which can be seen from a few backyards, is scattered with trees and has a playground. Valley Water Mill Park is also just 4 miles north. It features a 13-acre lake with fishing piers along a boardwalk and a 1.5-mile nature trail.

Fun after-school programs at Fremont Elementary
Students start at Fremont Elementary School, which gets a C-plus grade from Niche and is 1.5 miles from the neighborhood. Fremont students can join one of the many after-school clubs with activities like bowling, pottery and Lego-based robotics. Kids move on to B-minus-graded Pleasant View K-8 School and C-graded Hill Crest High. In 2021, Springfield Public Schools cut the ribbon on the new and improved high school after a $35 million renovation project added a four-story wing of classrooms to the campus.

Located in far north Springfield, the Hillcrest High School campus has an almost rural feel.

A 5-mile drive to Downtown Springfield
It's about a 5-mile drive to Downtown Springfield from the main roads. City Utilities provides public buses from Kearney Street and Glenstone Avenue, which can be taken all over Springfield. Interstate 44, which runs 215 miles northeast to St. Louis and 180 miles southwest to Tulsa is on the north side of Parkwood, which is why the neighborhood has so many hotels.
Residents in Parkwood rely on public transportation with bus stops and sidewalks throughout.
