West Central
Grant Avenue Parkway Project plans for upgrades
Traveling from downtown Springfield, along the east border of the West Central neighborhood and all the way down to Sunshine Street is going to become much easier with the Grant Avenue Parkway Project. Residents will have bike paths and improved streets, allowing for more opportunities to walk around the downtown area all the way to the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium. “It’s a very cool and progressive project,” says Candace Faith, an experienced Realtor with eXp Realty who also owns the Circle on the Square yoga studio in downtown Springfield. “It will get people out of their homes and make the area a lot nicer and less car-centric. The goal is to give people a better live-work situation.”Driving or biking to downtown Springfield
Commuters can be in downtown Springfield in roughly 10 minutes by car or bicycle. Locals who want to travel out of state drive 8 miles to catch a flight at Springfield-Branson National Airport. CU Transit buses run along West Mountain Vernon Street and West Walnut Street, giving locals access to public transportation.Historic ground at the Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park
Locals who want to see a piece of history visit the Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park. Visitors can take a picture in front of Red’s Giant Hamburg sign or see the mosaic art along the retaining walls across the street. Residents who want more green space to run around visit Jenny Lincoln Park. Guests can walk along the paved trails while kids hang out on the nearby playground equipment or families have a picnic in the open grassy areas.1950s bungalows near narrow sidewalks
Two-bedroom bungalows with wide front porches and simple national-style homes fill the West Central streets. Most were built in the early 1900s to the 1950s, and they often sell for less than $100,000 up to $435,000. Residents often park on uncovered driveways, but the occasional home features an attached garage. Duplexes also sit scattered throughout the area, creating more options for homeowners who aren’t ready to manage a full home. Narrow sidewalks line the streets, giving residents a path to use when walking their dogs or going to a nearby bus stop.Fresh finds at Urban Roots Farm
The nearby Urban Roots Farm aims to support the community with fresh produce and to keep farmers connected to West Central residents. Some might enroll in the CSA program to get veggies and fruit while others pick up items at the farmstand that runs on an honor system. For more essential groceries, residents shop at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Grand Street.Folks who want a break from cooking head downtown to grab a bite at Black Sheep Burgers and Shakes. Faith recommends Druff’s, where locals can pick up a breakfast sandwich or soup for lunch in a classic diner. Some catch up with friends over a drink at Mother’s Brewing Company.
Becoming a Parkview High Viking
The C-rated McGregor Elementary School sits within the neighborhood, and it’s close enough to some homes that parents can walk their kids to school. After attending Westport K-8 for middle school, students transition to Parkview High School. Both schools earn a C-plus from Niche. Kids at Parkview High School can try out to become a Viking band member or join one of the many extracurricular clubs.Car shows and music at the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival
West Central comes alive every August with the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival, which features live music, delicious food, a parade and car shows. Residents can also pop over to downtown Springfield for other events like the Taste of SoMo food festival every June in Park Central Square. Some head to the Missouri State Campus to cheer on the Bears during a basketball or football team.
