Secluded Craftsman homes and Colonial-inspired estates with acreage
Westover residences vary architecturally from quaint, 1,500-square-foot ranch-style homes to sprawling Colonial-inspired estates on a few acres. Throughout the neighborhood’s winding backroads, it’s also common to find a Craftsman hidden in the woods or a contemporary sitting on a hill. Many homes have in-ground pools and well-manicured, landscaped grounds. It's no surprise that homes here don’t take long to turnover. “This is a fast-moving market,” Boxer says. “Homes usually sell within a week or two."Price tags range from about $720,000 for a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom ranch-style house on half an acre of land to upwards of $4 million for a 9,000-square-foot French Colonial sitting on more than 3 acres. The average home value is around $1.25 million, which typically includes at least 3,000 square feet of updated interior space, a multicar garage and at least an acre of privacy. In addition to this air of seclusion, Westover has the lowest possible CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, in comparison to the national average of 4 out of 10.
Wildlife and history around Mianus River Park
Mianus River Park covers the entire western section of Westover, with almost 400 acres of wooded preserve. The park has several hiking and biking trails, as well as spots for fishing and birdwatching. Friends of Mianus River Park holds group hikes on the first Monday of each month, aiming to explore the lesser-used trails and tidy the paths as deemed necessary. There has been an influx of black bear sightings in the forest, so trail walkers are highly encouraged to keep their dogs leashed. A nonprofit organization, Music in the Woods, hosts regular artist meetups and solo performances in a private residence located near the small parking area for Mianus River Park. “We give back to the area schools, and we help children learn through classical music,” says Mahmoud Broadhead, a volunteer with Music in the Woods. “We’re trying to expand and offer classes for all types of music.”Just outside the entrance to Mianus River Park is Fort Stamford, which offers history to the natural landscape on this side of Westover. The fort was built during the Revolutionary War to defend against British loyalists, and after the war ended, the fort was closed. Years later, in the 1970s, the land was purchased by stockbroker Marcus Goodbody, who moved his family to the property. His wife created the Italianate Gardens that are still there today, maintained by the Stamford Garden Club and open to the public.
About 2 miles from Fort Stamford, the membership-only Roxbury Swim & Tennis Club has an outdoor pool with a kid-friendly splash section and tennis courts. On the southeast side of Westover is Brennan Golf Course, a public 18-hole course. And just a couple blocks from the fairway is the family-friendly Scalzi Park. Among its many recreational amenities are a skateboard area, tennis courts, playgrounds and paved trails. There is also a splash pad open during the summer months, and the Cubeta Stadium hosts Stamford’s Little League teams.
