Westside Stamford
Friendly, front porch lifestyle
Away from the business district in the residential pockets of Westside Stamford, homes sit close together with sidewalks lining the streets. While there are several 1,000-square-foot multifamily homes and townhouses for around $200,000, there are also 1,000- to 3,500-square-foot Shotgun houses, colonials and ranch homes, some boasting front porches, fenced-in yards, brick siding, additions or conversions in the $325,000 to $700,000 price range.Local and nationally-known eats
West Main Street, which runs through town, is where many Westside Stamford locals go for groceries, shopping and dining. They can pick up ingredients and essentials at Stop & Shop or ShopRite just across the street. “There are also a few Grade A Markets nearby, and the one near Westside Stamford is family-owned and has been there for years,” Zinsser adds. Near Mill River Park on Main Street is Soul Tasty Restaurant, a takeout spot that serves classic southern soul food. Locals enjoy family-style Italian cuisine in an old-school setting at the women-owned Pellicci’s. “People usually go into the downtown area for restaurants, where there’s a Bartaco, a Buffalo Wild Wings and a diverse selection of cuisines. There’s also Kouzina Greek Taverna and Bar, which was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives,” Zinsser says.Trails with cityscapes at Mill River Park
“Westside Stamford has a lot of industry, but there are also a lot of parks here—whether within walking distance or a short drive away,” Zinsser says. There’s green space and a paved walking path at Jackie Robinson Park, right off Main Street. Near the hospital, athletic teams practice and play at Lione Park. East of the neighborhood is Mill River Park, where there’s a playground, an artisan carousel and trails around the Rippowam River. “The park is really nice, as it was redone recently. There’s an ice-skating rink in the winter, a dog park, and they even offer free yoga classes,” Zinsser adds. Across from Mill River Park is the Whittingham Discovery Center, an environmental center that offers interactive exhibits. Both the park and the discovery center host events for the community.Highly-ranked Stamford public schools
The Stamford School District, which has a B-plus overall Niche rating, serves students living in the Westside Stamford area. Younger learners can attend the B-plus graded Westover School, a magnet elementary school that’s also ranked the No. 5 Standout Elementary School in Connecticut, according to Niche. Several bus stops pepper Main Street and nearby streets throughout Westside Stamford. “The public transportation is amazing here. Most people need a car, but buses typically take you where you need to go, and the Stamford train takes passengers right into Grand Central Station in just 45 minutes", Zinsser says. “A lot of people choose to live in Stamford and work in the city.” With the interstate running through town, Westside Stamford can seem more like a business district than a residential neighborhood, but this busy suburb attracts commuters and people who appreciate the proximity to shops and dining, without the added hassle of the city.UCONN Stamford and Stamford hospital
The Stamford Hospital is conveniently located in the northern part of town. College students from all over flock to Westside Stamford to attend UCONN Stamford, adding to traffic congestion in the busier parts of downtown Stamford.
