The poetry of nature is strong in Arden Heights
Named for an idyllic woodland featured in Shakespeare’s play “As You Like It,” the Arden Heights neighborhood is at the center of Staten Island’s green rebirth. This suburban community is surrounded by revitalized natural spaces, including the Freshkills Park, one of New York City’s most ambitious environmental rehabilitation projects. Forest and wetlands provide a verdant backdrop to this quiet bedroom community, while two major highways facilitate citybound commutes.

Townhouses predominate in Arden Heights
Though the oldest homes in Arden Heights date to the Civil War and its name was coined by a Canadian publisher in 1886, this community was not truly born until the intense suburbanization of the South Shore in the 1970s. Village Greens, New York’s first planned urban development, is located in the neighborhood and testifies to Staten Island’s townhouse boom. Linda Bradley with the Village Greens Residents Association says, “It’s great to live in Village Greens; it’s a small community. I’ve been living here for 45 years. Everything is really close by; the neighbors are terrific. We have a park, tennis courts, and a pool, and we even have little leagues for the kids and movies in the summer." Units in this development sell for between $528,000 and $720,000. "We have 749 homes; everybody owns their own home," Bradley adds. The rest of Arden Heights features a combination of homes built from the 1970s to 1980s and more recent builds from the 2000s to 2020s. Fully detached homes built before 2000 sell for between $652,000 and $1.9 million, while those built since then start at $735,000 and sell for up to $2.1 million. Overall, prices here have risen 8% over the past 12 months and the average price of $1.04 million is above the median for the New York Metro Area. Home styles vary from the ubiquitous townhouse to Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival aesthetics, and most homes feature sizeable front lawns and driveways as well as sidewalk access. The neighborhood scores a 2 out of 10 on the Cap Crime Index, which is below the national average of 4.

Environmental transformation at South Shore parks
The Arden Heights Woods, named for the Forest of Arden in Shakespeare’s native Warwickshire, is New York City’s largest protected wetlands. It encompasses 183 acres of kettle ponds formed by prehistoric glacial shifts and is also a prime destination for listening to the calls of local owls. Brookfield Park, about a mile away, was once a chemical wasteland. It has since been transformed into a thriving wetland ecosystem navigable by pedestrian trails. Freshkills Park, formerly the world’s largest landfill, forms Arden Heights’ western border and is in the midst of evolving into the second-largest park in New York City. Though the project isn't expected to be completed until 2037, its biking paths already invite cyclists to explore its flat trails, while its mounds offer commanding views of the Fresh Kills estuary.
