Urban and suburban with a rich history
Located on the northern tip of Staten Island overlooking Kill Van Kull Strait, Port Richmond is one of Staten Island’s oldest neighborhoods. It once served as a bustling 19th-century shipping and transportation hub and provided a convenient stopover for people traveling between Philadelphia and New York City. However, the migration of shipping and manufacturing to other parts of the island resulted in a significant economic decline. Today, numerous organizations and advocacy groups are dedicated to building community and addressing issues such as safety, small business development, sanitation and infrastructure.
“There's no denying that this is an industrial and residential urban neighborhood,” says Kevin Bryant, a licensed real estate salesperson on the Joe Tirone team at Compass. “If you’re looking for an urban community and everything that comes with it, then Port Richmond is for you.”
That means you’ll find small businesses dotting the streets, industrial properties both converted and awaiting renewal, streets with single-family homes and large residences split into apartments. Streetscapes include everything from low-rise commercial strips, residential blocks, suburban-like thoroughfares and a commercial warehouse district.
Port Richmond is a historic, diverse neighborhood on Staten Island.
