A global community on the rise

In the mid-1800s, the Pennsylvania Steel Company chose to build on the land that is now Steelton for proximity to the railroad and the Pennsylvania Canal. Today, this working-class borough of Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, still employs steel workers but is also home to families from around the world. “I have neighbors from Croatia and Estonia,” says Laurel Windsor, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HS Homesale Realty. Windsor bought a home in the borough several years ago for its old-world charm and view of the Susquehanna River. “Steelton is minutes to the capital steps or wherever you want to go in Harrisburg,” she says. “The city is also improving the infrastructure along Interstate 83 at Steelton’s front door. Once that’s done, the area is only going one way — up.”

Steelton was founded in 1880 and is home to approximately 6,000 residents.

Every block holds something new

Most homes in Steelton are brick townhouses or duplexes, dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. They sit along steep, hilly streets, some with bay windows and river views, selling for between $50,000 and $170,000. Single-family colonial, Victorian and midcentury modern homes are available for $130,000 to $260,000. Multi-family homes also go on the market, listing for as much as $500,000. “You can drive through Steelton, turn a corner, and you’re in a whole new world,” Windsor says. “One block varies so much from the next. Some need renovating, and others have gone through preservation.” Homebuyers should also remember that because Steelton borders the Susquehanna, low-lying homes near the river may require flood insurance.
