Downtown Steubenville
American Foursquares and duplexes along city blocks
Downtown Steubenville residents live among mixed-use blocks and a grid of narrow streets squared along the west side of the Ohio River. Fourth Street and some of the surrounding throughways are home to the houses of worship that contribute to Downtown Steubenville’s status as a hub for local religion. Institutions in the neighborhood include St. Peter Catholic Church, a parish with a heritage dating back to 1819, and First Westminster Presbyterian Church, which has roots dating back to 1801. Early 20th-century Foursquare houses are the main style available in the area, with front-gabled roofs and covered porches common among properties. Select properties keep similar stylings arranged in a duplex format, while small ranch and one-story homes are also available but less common. Some homes have been preserved by families for decades or have contemporary renovations inside to contrast with the exterior identity, while others would require major repairs prior to move-in day. Houses with higher upkeep needs generally range from $8,000 to $17,000. Buyers can expect a range between $37,000 and $250,000 for turnkey properties. Open land in the area generally sells between $4,000 and $10,000. Downtown Steubenville scores a 7 on the CAP Index, which is above average. With the national average at 4, certain violent crime categories score above Steubenville's baseline. Ohio lawmakers allocated grant funds in 2024 to support local crime prevention efforts, as part of a statewide program designed to support local law enforcement agencies.Fort Steuben, where the city began
Steubenville’s story begins with Fort Steuben, a colonial fort built in the late 18th century after the end of the Revolutionary War. The fort, and Steubenville itself, takes its name from Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben, one of George Washington’s key lieutenants. Steuben never actually made his way to Steubenville, but the fort stands as a monument to his legacy, as well as serving as a park and concert venue for the public. One of Steubenville’s largest recreational areas sits just south of the downtown area. Beatty Park has been a staple of outdoor life in Steubenville for more than a century, as noted by the park’s stone bridge originally built in 1885. The city’s parks and recreation department and the Friends of Beatty Park citizen group collaborated to restore the bridge in 2022. Visitors can also enjoy disc golf, walking trails and a playground on the park grounds. Residents young and old can get moving at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, which has a weight room, gymnasium and pickleball courts. Families can sign kids up for flag football, summer camps and Little Dribblers basketball programs, while adults can sign up for Zumba and other fitness programs. Locals can also stop by the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County for a mix of entertainment and educational programs, from kids’ craft sessions and story readings to monthly book clubs for general fiction and mystery lovers. The library was first established in 1899 and funded by a grant from Andrew Carnegie.

Fourth Street also hosts the monthly First Fridays gathering with unique themes like “Nineties Night” and “Ye Olde First Friday.”During the holiday season, the Steubenville Nutcracker Village bills itself as the world’s largest display of life-size nutcracker statues.
