Bear Hill offers a variety of housing prices, shopping, dining and nature

Bear Hill, 13 miles from Boston, is a suburban area near shopping and dining with a golf club of the same name. Residents enjoy the tree-lined streets and parks, shopping and dining, and the variety in housing prices. “It’s a desirable area for people who want to put down their roots, a great family-oriented place surrounded by a lot of greenery,” says Praveen Khare, a broker with Keller Williams Realty Boston Northwest. Khare has worked in the industry for almost a decade. “The price range compared to Boston is significantly cheaper, but it’s still not one of those towns with a competitive housing market.” Bear Hill offers a range of prices and housing types near Main Street. Most homes have a front and a backyard or are close to public parks. Main Street also borders the area, and some homes are within walking distance from shops and restaurants.

Single-family homes, townhouses and condos near a golf course and Main Street

Most homes surround the Bear Hill Golf Club, lined with wide, winding roads and mature trees. Main Street borders the west side of the neighborhood. This high-traffic area may become noisy during rush hour, though most homes are farther from Main Street. Homes have front and backyards enclosed by fences; some are lined with sidewalks. The area is primarily single-family homes, but there are some townhouses and condos. Houses have a median build year of 1959 and are in the Colonial Revival and Cape Cod styles. Single-family homes range from $675,000 to $825,000. Larger New Traditional-style homes range from $1 million to $1.5 million. Condos and townhouses range from $375,000 to $675,000.

Local parks and a private golf course

Bear Hill Golf Club is the centerpiece here and offers its members a nine-hole course with a clubhouse and a fitness center. “People in the area and from surrounding areas are part of the golf club. It’s one of the most appealing places to walk around and be surrounded by nature, people go there for morning walks,” says Khare. Near Broadway, close to the neighborhood's southern end, Joseph C. Cerrone Memorial Park has several soccer fields for leagues and school games. Rounds Playground has a baseball field and a climbing gym for children.

Commuters use Interstate 93 and public transportation

Commuters head south on Interstate 93 to reach Boston in about 30 minutes. Residents also head to Wakefield train station, 1 mile east, to catch a train on the Haverhill Line, which reaches Boston in 23 minutes. Winchester Hospital is 3 miles away, and the Boston Logan International Airport is 14 miles away. Shopping and dining along Main Street

“Main Street is the heart of Stoneham,” says Khare. It borders the area and is within walking distance of some homes. Redstone Shopping Center includes the Tulip Lounge, a hibachi restaurant with a sushi bar. Farther down Main Street is a Stop & Shop for groceries and Gaetano’s Restaurant, which has Italian comfort food. For fresh produce and artisanal goods, the Stoneham Farmers Market is open on Thursdays at the Town Common, 1 mile south, from June to September. Two miles from Bear Hill, near the Yankee Division Highway, are two commercial centers, the one along Commerce Way has stores like Lowe’s and HomeGoods, some chain restaurants and a Market Basket. There are more strip malls and a Stop & Shop along Walkers Brook Drive.
