Lifelong connections in Colonial Park
About 12 miles from downtown Boston, Stoneham’s Colonial Park neighborhood prioritizes the family-oriented lifestyle. “It’s popular for two main reasons,” says Century 21 Broker/Owner Craig Celli, a lifelong Stoneham resident who has sold in the area since 1989. “It’s at the very end of a cul-de-sac with no major thoroughfares, so kids can walk to school on safer side streets. Secondly, there are really nice homes, but first-time buyers still have options under $1 million.” Determined by elementary school zoning, Stoneham is divided into three major areas: Colonial Park, Robin Hood and South. Each neighborhood takes pride in its assigned school, forming a close community involved in youth education and athletics. “What’s wonderful is it always seems to be an even turnover of new families coming in,” Celli says. “So, it’s an ongoing cycle of kids growing up together and then starting again with the next generation.” With Interstate 93 flowing nearby and back-door access to Middlesex Fells Reservation, Colonial Park offers convenience and nature, key reasons that residents keep their homes here for decades.

Miles of nature to explore in Colonial Park
The town’s largest green space, Middlesex Fells Reservation, abuts Colonial Park. The area not only offers miles of multiuse trails for summer and winter activities, but it also features the Stone Zoo, playgrounds and a pond. Paddlers take out their kayaks in the summer; fishers can catch largemouth bass and bluegills, and hikers can traverse the loop at Spot Pond. At Recreation Park and Pomeworth Field, there are basketball courts, open fields and baseball diamonds. The Tri-Community Greenway begins at Pomeworth Field and leads to Winchester and Woburn. This nearly 7-mile path cuts through parks, old rail trails and tunnels, decorated with bright graffiti. Whip Hill Park is another town-owned space, anchored by a 20th-century Tudor-style estate that hosts annual Santa visits during the holiday season.

Shops at Redstone and subs at Anthony’s
Restaurants in Colonial Park can be found along Main and Franklin streets. Options range from pizza places and cafes to authentic Asian spots, but Anthony’s Italian Specialties has become a town-wide mainstay. “If you haven’t gotten a sub from Anthony’s, then you haven’t gotten the best sub in Stoneham,” Celli says. “It’s been there for generations. That’s the place everyone knows.”
While convenience stores, boutiques and other businesses line Main Street and surround the town common, the Redstone Shopping Center just down the road has a Target and CVS. Stop & Shop is also right across Main Street from Colonial Park.

Unique activities bring Colonial Park residents together
The Stoneham Town Common hosts a slew of events, including the seasonal farmers market, the holiday tree lighting and live music. The common is also the site of the annual Town Day celebration, which hosts vendors, games and food trucks. “It’s extremely well attended,” Celli says. “This past September, it was pouring rain, but hundreds of people still showed up.”
The Stoneham Town Hall is another event space for the Winter Arts & Crafts Fair and the Health + Wellness Fair, while the public library offers summer camps, reading groups and art shows.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority buses stop along Main Street, though Stoneham has no commuter rail or T stations. Neighboring cities, like Melrose and Wakefield have commuter rail access within a few miles of Colonial Park. “These towns have higher average price points than Stoneham because of their commuter rails,” Celli says. “But, Colonial Park is closer to the Melrose line than Melrose is in some areas.” Commuters can also take interstates 93 and 95 to travel up and down the coast and into Boston. Flights take off from Boston Logan International Airport, about 13 miles away.
Much of Stoneham offers free parking, though cars must be cleared off public streets during snow emergencies. The area gets an average of about 50 inches of snow per year, but as Celli says, “We dig ourselves out of the snow together as a community, and the next day, the town and schools are open.”
