Lindenwood
Hiking trails, town parks and coastal getaways
Stoneham boasts an array of green spaces. Three miles from the neighborhood, Middlesex Fells Reservation spans over 2,500 acres along the south side of town. With trailheads tucked into local communities, the reservation features over 100 miles of forested hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails that weave around six different ponds and reservoirs. The reservation encompasses several well-known parks. "We have Spot Pond, Whip Hill, Sheepfold, I could go on," Kelly says. The nearly 300-acre Spot Pond welcomes anglers, kayakers and canoeists. However, personal vessels are prohibited, and visitors must rent the equipment.Near the pond, furry friends can run around the Sheepfold Dog Park, a spacious, off-leash field bordered by pine woods. Winthrop Hill is one of the most popular hiking trails in the area, offering scenic vistas. On the other side of the park, Boojum Rock features sweeping views of Boston's skyline. Greenwood Park, located at the eastern edge of the reservation, offers wooded hiking trails, open fields and playgrounds. The adjacent Stone Zoo draws families year-round with seasonal light displays and live animal exhibits.
Additional green spaces are scattered around town. Pomeworth Field features sports courts and a playground. The Stoneham Town Common offers an open green space along Main Street, while the Tri-Community Greenway's 10-mile paved path welcomes runners and cyclists. For a different kind of green, two public nine-hole golf courses hug Lindenwood's western border. Coastal getaways are also nearby, with summer crowds flocking to Long Beach, just 15 miles east of the neighborhood.
Stoneham's year-round calendar of community events
Stoneham's Town Common, the central gathering place for community events, hugs the corner of Main Street and Central Street. In September, Town Day draws crowds with food trucks, vendor booths, kids' games and live music. The annual Halloween Stroll turns Main Street into a costumed parade of families visiting local shops to trick-or-treat for candy, while the common serves as the site for pumpkin decorating, crafting activities and a bounce house. Winter ushers in craft fairs and the town tree lighting, when locals browse handmade gifts and sip hot cocoa. "We also have Thursday afternoon farmers markets on the common," Kelly says. "Then, once summer comes along, we have free movies and concerts on the common."Ramblers, split-levels, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals
Lindenwood's development over the centuries is reflected in its architecture. Quiet residential roads feature a handful of historic 19th-century homes near Main Street. Twentieth-century Cape Cods and Tudor Revivals are scattered between modest ramblers and colonial-style homes. Other streets are more uniform, with rows of bi-levels and split-levels that boast attached garages. "Colonials and Capes are by far the most popular housing style," Kelly says. Homebuyers looking for a clean slate can score a fixer-upper for under $650,000, but sales prices in Lindenwood typically range from $650,000 to the upper-$800,000s. Properties with more square footage can fetch price tags that range from $900,000 to $1 million, and a handful of larger, 21st-century Colonial Revivals can sell for more than $1 million. "We offer good value for our lot sizes compared to surrounding towns," Kelly says. Along Lindenwood's borders, two condominium buildings, Montvale and Monterosa, feature units that range from $400,000 to $600,000.Highly rated Stoneham Public Schools
Stoneham Public Schools serves the community and garners a B-plus rating from Niche. Kindergarteners through fourth graders may attend Robin Hood Elementary School, which earns an A-minus and sits within walking distance for many residents. Older students may then attend B-plus-rated schools such as Stoneham Central Middle and Stoneham High. In August 2024, high schoolers and staff were greeted with a brand-new three-story building with state-of-the-art facilities, including a new athletic complex, walking trails around the grounds and a wing dedicated to administrative offices and pre-k classes.Amenities along Main Street
Main Street is the commercial hub of town. Local establishments include an eclectic mix of taverns, pizza joints, florists, hair salons and dessert shops. "We have a lot of mom-and-pop shops," Kelly says. "There are bookstores, craft stores, coffee shops and cafes—all owned by Stoneham residents." Target anchors Redstone Shopping Center, Stoneham's central shopping plaza. Stop & Shop is down the road for daily needs, while J&B Butcher offers curated cuts of meat.Stoneham's central downtown area unfurls along the intersection of Main Street and Central Street. Here, residents will find local gems like The Stones Common House & Kitchen for seasonal New England fare. Residents can also unwind at the laid-back Nobility Hill Tavern, a neighborhood staple for burgers and beer. The Greater Boston Stage Company anchors the cultural scene with plays and performances steps from the Town Common, offering a night out without the need to head into the city.
Commutes around the Boston metro area
While many residents here use their own vehicles to get around, folks living in the area have multiple mass-transit options available to them. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) services Stoneham with bus routes along Main Street. Downtown Boston commuters have access to three train stations within a 5-mile radius, including Wakefield, Reading and Anderson/Woburn. Interstates 95 and 93 offer convenient commutes around the metro area. Boston Logan International Airport is less than 15 miles away via I-93, and Winchester Hospital is just 2 miles away.
