A small town renowned for its schools

Incorporated in 1972, the town of Stonewall, located 23 miles south of Shreveport, is growing as a community in large part due to its stellar schools. “DeSoto Parish invests a lot of money into hiring great teachers,” says Greg Ryan, real estate agent at Re/Max with more than 30 years of experience in real estate. “Many families move there from the city specifically for the schools and then drive out for work.” With plenty of local restaurants and markets, many specializing in Cajun food, Stonewall’s recent growth hasn’t stunted its small-town feel.

From manufactured homes to new subdivisions

Although there are many renovated historical properties in Stonewall, many newer subdivisions and custom construction have become available in recent years. “The area is becoming more suburban with planned communities, but you can still find half-acre or acre lots,” Ryan says. Three-bedroom midcentury National and ranch-style homes with covered porches on flat, grassy lots can sell for less than $200,000, while 2000s-era French Colonial Revival-style homes with steep hipped roofs and stone exteriors can sell for around $350,000. Less expensive manufactured homes from the 2000s with three bedrooms on multi-acre lots can also be found for around $150,000. Recently built New Traditional-style homes with attached two-car garages and steeply pitched roofs feature winding front walkways lined with greenery, selling for about $500,000.

Access to outlying areas via I-171

Residents of Stonewall are car-dependent due to a lack of public transportation and the town’s wide-spread layout. Its location on I-171 provides access to downtown Shreveport, about 23 miles north, and nearby hospital Willis-Knighton South, about 9 miles north. Nearby airports include Shreveport Regional Airport, which is about 15 miles away.

Mom-and-pop bakeries and local markets

Shops and restaurants, both chain and local, sit along I-171, which runs straight through town. Locals can head to DG Market for groceries and fresh produce, while Cousin’s Cajun Market is a one-stop shop for specialty meats and lunch specials. Something Tasty is a favorite among Stonewall residents for its fresh sandwiches, salads and coffee, while Sunrise Cookies, a local mom-and-pop bakery, specializes in bread, king cakes and fresh-baked cookies. Locally owned stores include the Cardinal Music Company, owned and operated by the Wilkinson family, coming from a long line of family musicians.
