Stonington is a coastal village in New England that embraces its life by the sea. Situated by the southeastern border between Connecticut and Rhode Island, Stonington has the last commercial fishing fleet in the state with numerous seaside excursions in the Long Island Sound. New England parks and beaches
Stonington has several miles of walking trails, preserves and sandy beaches where locals like to swim and sunbathe. DuBois Beach has a gazebo and an anchored dock and was named one of the "Boston Globe's" Top 20 New England beaches. Boating, fishing and scuba diving take place along the oceanfront, as well as various harbor cruises and private charters. Pickleball and tennis are prominent activities at the Stonington Community Center, which also has a pottery studio, thrift shop, makerspace and a children's garden and playground. The historic district has several museums and libraries, and the Hoffman Evergreen Preserve has over 200 acres of hardwood forestry and wetlands.

Cape Cod homes, cottages and condos
Not only does Stonington have a popular housing market, but it also welcomes a seasonal population during the peak of summer tourism. “People have second, third and fourth homes here,” Caracausa says. “People who can live anywhere in the world are moving here.” Lawns are lined with stone walls, landscaped bushes, grassy plains and wooden fences, with many cottages and condominiums costing $200,000 to $500,000. Many of the colonial and Cape Cod homes on the waterfront have private docks and are between $500,000 and $850,000. Larger homes with 3,000 to 5,000 square feet of space and 1- to 5-acre lots will be most expensive between $1 million and $3 million.

Mystic River events and music festivals
The village of Mystic hosts several events all year long by the coast and riverside. Mystic Restaurant Week kicks off the year with special menus at discounted prices, while the spring brings the Mystic Irish Parade and 5K. Live music and arts festivals take place over the summer, as well as the Wooden Boat Show, New London Sailfest and Sharkfest. Food festivals occur in the fall, while horse-drawn carriages, Christmas cookies and carolers close out the year in the Lantern Light Village.

Shopping and dining in downtown Stonington
Downtown Stonington is filled with all kinds of retailers, ranging from jewelry and floral shops to home goods and accessory stores. “It’s very, very charming – wonderful antique shops, women’s clothing stores, gift shops, arts and crafts,” Carracausa says. "I frequently shop there, and it’s very popular for both locals and tourists alike.” Local eateries consist of independently-owned cafes, markets and fine dining seafood restaurants.

Stonington schools and private education
The Stonington School District earned an A-minus on Niche and was rated the fifth-best school district in New London County. The educational pathway starts at Deans Mill School, which serves pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students and earned an A-minus on Niche. Stonington Middle has a 7-to-1 student-teacher ratio and also earned an A-minus. Stonington High School has a 95% graduation rate and also earned an A-minus. Pine Point School is a local private school that has been serving the area since 1948.

U.S. Route 1 to Rhode Island
Rhode Island is less than 6 miles east when driving down U.S. Route 1, while Mystic is 5 miles west in the opposite direction. The closest 24-hour urgent care is across state lines in Rhode Island at the Westerly Hospital, while the Tweed New Haven Airport is around 60 miles west.
