An engaged community with outdoor recreation in Stratford

A suburban neighborhood with tree-lined streets in northern Stratford, Oronoque is a laidback community largely comprised of the active 55-plus community called Oronoque Village. The condominium community is built around the golf course for the Blackhawk Country Club, a social club that many residents join. “People who move to this area aren’t usually looking to leave in a few years. They’re looking to really put down roots and invest in the community,” says Monica Dalton, a Realtor with Oronoque Real Estate and longtime Oronoque resident. Whether they live in the 55-plus condos or the single-family homes and other condos surrounding them, locals enjoy living near outdoor recreation and popular stores and restaurants.

Renovated condos and Colonial Revivals in Oronoque

The Oronoque Village condo community makes up a large part of the neighborhood, with over 900 units organized along residential streets that wind around the Blackhawk Country Club golf course. The condos were built in the 1970s, but many have modern renovations; prices start around $250,000 and rise to $550,000. Around the neighborhood's perimeter are peaceful residential streets of single-family homes and other condo buildings. Condos in the Far Mill River subdivision were also built in the late 20th century and cost between $300,000 and $400,000. Ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals with neat, grassy yards from the early-to-mid 1900s are priced between $400,000 and $700,000.

Tennis, golf and nature trails near Oronoque

Residents of Oronoque Village can access the community’s amenities, like the swimming pools and bocce ball and tennis courts. “The village is like living in a country club. We’re built right onto a golf course,” Dalton says. The Blackhawk Country Club, a private club that residents of the village and the larger Oronoque neighborhood can both pay to join, has two 18-hole courses, pickleball and tennis courts, swimming pools and an indoor gym. The neighborhood is also near several nature preserves. Hikers can explore wooded trails through the Roosevelt Forest, and anglers may drive about 3 miles north to find fishing spots along the Housatonic River. During the summer, residents drive 8 miles south to the coast, where they relax and swim at Short Beach.

Commuters merge onto the Merritt Parkway or take the train

Locals usually rely on cars to run errands and commute to work. State Route 15, or the Merritt Parkway, runs just south of the neighborhood and takes drivers 70 miles southwest to New York City. Residents can use the same roadway or take Interstate 95 to travel 15 miles northeast to New Haven. Dalton says that many people headed into New York City take the train instead. The Stratford station, where passengers board the New Haven line on the Metro-North Railroad, is about 5 miles south of Oronoque. The train ride takes between 90 and 120 minutes to reach Grand Central Terminal.

Shopping and dining in Shelton

Even if they don’t belong to the Blackhawk Country Club, residents can eat at its seasonal restaurant, which serves upscale American fare like steak and seared salmon. There are a few restaurants and stores along Main Street, including chains like Dunkin and local eateries like House of Pho, a laidback restaurant serving Vietnamese noodle dishes. But most residents drive a few miles to go out to eat. “We’re in the northern part of Stratford, so the closer stores and restaurants are in Shelton,” Dalton says. In downtown Shelton, locals can order pizza and other Italian dishes at Caloroso Eatery & Bar or enjoy seafood and cocktails alongside views of the Housatonic River at Pier131 Kitchen & Bar. For a more relaxed evening of beer and wings, there’s Porky’s Café, a casual sports bar. Shelton also has convenient shopping plazas, where people head to Stop & Shop or ShopRite for grocery runs. Shoppers may also browse retail stores like T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods.
