Rural Virginia community hugging the North Carolina border
The expanses of rolling woodlands and farmlands in Claudville may deter some, but the natural southwest Virginian setting draws those looking for a retreat from the hustle and bustle of surrounding urban areas. “Claudville is very rural with a lot of farms and a post office,” says broker and owner Edd Martin of Edd Martin & Associates, adding that the community’s main appeal lies in its bucolic setting while keeping residents connected to nearby small towns. Hugging the Virginia-North Carolina state line, Claudville sits equidistantly 13 miles west of Stuart and northeast of Mount Airy, North Carolina. “People move to Claudville for quality of life and low taxes,” says Martin, a Patrick County native. “They want to be out of the city and are working from home or commuting, so they can get their kids in the great school system here and be out in the countryside without having the problems or crime you have in the city.” Apart from access to top-rated schools and wide-open spaces, Claudville offers proximity to outdoor recreation in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. Additionally, the community has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, which is the lowest score possible and is significantly lower than the national score of 4.
Established farmhouses and ranch styles
The spread-out and rural nature of Claudville provides more space for residents. Lots are larger and offer privacy from neighbors. New construction is rarer, Martin says, and older farmhouses and brick ranch homes are the most common architectural styles. Mountain cottages and minimalistic bungalows are also amidst the housing mix. Prices typically range between $115,000 and $450,000. Parcels of land are also available, providing opportunities for custom builds.
Strong education in Patrick County Public Schools
Patrick County Public Schools serves Claudville students and receives an A-minus grade from Niche. Students may begin at Blue Ridge Elementary School or Stuart Elementary School, both of which get A-minus scores and serve prekindergarten through seventh grades. Patrick County High School teaches eighth through twelfth grade and gets a B from Niche. Alongside its robust academic curriculum, Patrick County High School offers a high-performing fine arts program, including visual arts and theater, and a strong athletics program. Patrick and Henry Community College is in Stuart and offers associate degrees in science and applied science.
Proximity to river recreation, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Primland
Creeks and rivers run like veins through Claudville, offering opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Dan River is the largest and is an especially popular destination for fishing. “It’s a trout fishing mecca for some people,” Martin says. Residents are also about a 15-minute drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic 469-mile roadway that cuts through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The parkway is one of the most visited in the nation and serves as a big draw for the area, Martin says. Primland is also just north of Claudville. “Primland is an exclusive resort with 12,000 acres of land,” Martin says of the all-season estate that offers luxury cabin and tree house retreats alongside a slew of indoor and outdoor amenities. “It’s a big draw mostly for out-of-towners more than residents.”
Shopping in nearby Stuart or Mt Airy
Martin says most people do their shopping in Mt Airy or Stuart, both about a 15-minute drive away. Mt Airy is the renowned birthplace of Andy Griffith and the inspiration behind Mayberry in the Andy Griffith Show. Charming small-town shops and quaint eateries line the recently renovated downtown district, which is also dotted with tourist attractions. In Stuart, North Main Street houses most of the locally owned establishments, which includes local gift shops like The Hatteras Pearl and Main Street Cards and Gifts. Bars mingle alongside coffee shops, with favorites including Blue Ridge Taphouse and Stagecoach Coffee. The town also has a handful of fast-food chains and grocery options such as Walmart.
Convenient access to nearby towns and thoroghfares
Claudville sits at the junction of VA State Route 773 and 103, or Claudville Highway, which connects residents directly to Stuart and Mt Airy. Depending on a resident’s location in Claudville, it can take them 45 minutes to just over an hour to get to Greensboro and Winston-Salem. The Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro is the closest to Claudville.
