Fast-growing, rustic suburb just north of Greensboro
Situated just north of Greensboro, Summerfield has been a predominantly rural community for most of its history, but suburbanization is turning it into one of Guilford County’s most desirable suburbs. Since becoming an incorporated town in 1996, Summerfield has experienced rapid growth. “People started building houses here because they wanted to be out in the country but still live in a place with a strong sense of community,” says Matthew Benfield, Realtor with Tyler Redhead and McAlister Real Estate. “We’ve seen our kids grow up and move out to other places, but we still see new families coming into the community. Some small kids walk to school past the edge of our backyard and pet our dog on the way. Everyone knows each other and looks out for each other here.”
The Cone Health Greensboro Medical Center is not only a big employer in the area, but also the closest major hospital for Summerfield residents.

Summerfield’s homes are woven through farms and greenery
Summerfield’s median home price stands around $625,000, which is well above the national median. Most lots span close to an acre in size. “There are developers who would love to build a neighborhood and put 75 houses where most people would put 50, but regulations require them to have enough land for your well and septic system, so there’s no cluster housing here,” Benfield says. “Neighborhoods are woven through existing farms and green spaces.” Ranch-style homes fill the geographic core of Summerfield, typically priced below $500,000. Contemporary constructions are popping up west of Interstate 73 and north of Lake Brandt. Many follow French Country and New Traditional designs, with brick or vinyl siding and over 3,000 square feet of interior space. Some of these larger houses, which were typically built in the 2000s or later, can reach $1.5 million.
In 2024, the North Carolina General Assembly voted in favor of the de-annexation of roughly 1,000 acres of land from Summerfield for a planned mixed-use development project. “We don’t even know where exactly it will be, but it’s a long-term plan,” says Benfield, who has lived in Summerfield for 23 years.

Summerfield locals enjoy highly rated public and private schools
The Guilford County Schools district receives a B-plus from Niche. Through the Guilford Apprenticeship Program at A-minus-rated Northern Guilford High School, students can attend tuition-free courses at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC), receive worksite training and obtain an associate degree and a journeyperson’s license. GTCC is about a 20-mile drive southeast. “You can meet everyone through the schools,” Benfield says. “On the first day of school, our local gas station will even have free slushies for kids.”
Other educational institutions include A-plus-rated Summerfield Charter Academy, ranked by Niche as the best public elementary school in the Greensboro area. Located a few miles down U.S. Route 220, the Greensboro Academy scores an A. The school serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students and was ranked by U.S. News as the fifth-best public middle school in the state.

The Parks and Recreation Department has projects in the works
The Parks and Recreation Department oversees three playgrounds and two town parks. Summerfield Community Park is a center of activity. Walking trails encircle Schoolhouse Lake, leading to a butterfly garden and pier for fishing. The on-site Summerfield Community Center can be rented for special occasions, offering a kitchen and dining room. The Lake Brandt Marina or the Lake Higgins boat ramp grant boaters access to the bodies of water on Summerfield’s south end. Golf courses in the town’s vicinity include the public Iron Play and the semi-private Greensboro National Golf Club. Plans are underway to extend the Atlantic and Yadkin (A&Y) Greenway farther north through Summerfield. Currently, the trail runs from the intersection of Summerfield Road and Battleground Avenue all the way to Greensboro’s Country Park. Another upcoming project, Bandera Farms Park, will feature equestrian trails, a playground and access to the Piedmont Greenway.
You can enjoy fishing from the pier or from a boat at Lake Brandt near The Meadows.

Summerfield Farms and other local businesses
Summerfield does not have a traditional downtown, but residents will find restaurants, cafes and stores peppered around the community. Locals pick up organic brews and espresso at The Jumping Bean, a colorful drive-thru and walk-up coffee shop with a decorated outdoor seating area. Decorated with vintage signs and photos of American icons like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, Center Grove Grill & Soda Shop takes patrons back to the 1950s, serving diner fare and root beer floats. Summerfield Farms offers customers grass-fed beef, organic produce and an array of handcrafted goods. Other supermarkets and larger stores are located toward Summerfield’s periphery. But for larger malls and plazas like the Friendly Center, shoppers will have to venture into Greensboro.

Founders’ Day celebrates the community
Founders’ Day celebrates the earliest settlers of Summerfield with carnival rides, food and craft vendors and a Saturday morning parade. The event takes place over a weekend in mid-May. Other seasonal festivities include the Children’s Fishing Derby in June at Summerfield Community Park and Touch-A-Truck in October, where kids can explore and learn about fire trucks, ambulances and other vehicles. “Events here bring out city folk from Greensboro and even our mayor and city council members, who will explain future plans,” Benfield says.
Interstate 840 eases commutes
U.S. Route 220 bisects the city, running 12 miles south to downtown Greensboro. Interstate 73 heads 11 miles to Piedmont Triad International Airport. Downtown Winston-Salem sits 28 miles west of Summerfield, and Greensboro Medical Center lies 3 miles south of Summerfield. “Drive 2-3 miles out of Summerfield, and you’re close to everything: a hospital, dry cleaners, auto parts places and more. They’ve really built up north Greensboro, and the new Interstate 840 loop makes traveling around the city even easier,” Benfield says.
