Cane Savannah offers country life near city conveniences
Cane Savannah is far enough from downtown Sumter to feel like the country, but still close to dining and everyday essentials. “It’s just a rural area with farmland and housing,” says Heidi Burkett, a Realtor with ERA Wilder Realty and Sumter resident. “There’s not a lot of housing; it’s more spread out.” Buyers have the choice of an older home or something newer. Properties here tend to have more acreage than neighborhoods closer to the city's core. Burkett says Sumter is a growing city with a lot going on, and residents of Cane Savannah are just a short drive away from parks, schools and events.
Craftsman and ranch-style homes are on half-acre rural lots
The most common housing styles are two-story Craftsman and ranch-style homes. Most of the older properties date back to the 1960s and ‘70s, but there are several newly constructed houses. “It’s an area with mixed homes, mixed lots and some mobile homes,” Burkett says. Homes under 2,000 square feet range from around $180,000 to $260,000, while houses over 2,000 square feet start at about $320,000 and go up to $520,000. Small pockets of subdivisions are between large plots of undeveloped land, giving the area a rural feeling. The median lot size is over half an acre. Homes stay on the market for around 77 days, higher than the national average of 53 days.
All students can attend Bates Middle and Sumter High
Starting with the 2026-2027 school season, students living above McCrays Mill Road can attend Kingsbury Elementary, which has a C rating from Niche. Those living below the same road are zoned for C-plus-rated Wilder Elementary. The entire neighborhood can attend C-minus-rated Bates Middle and C-plus-rated Sumter High. Sophomores and juniors can apply for dual enrollment and early college programs through the University of South Carolina Sumter or Central Carolina Technical College. Sumter School District offers open enrollment based on availability and capacity.
Most parks and green spaces are a short drive away
The area has a few small ponds and lakes. Homes on McCray Lake have their own docks. The closest parks will require about a 6-mile drive. Patriot Park has softball and soccer fields, and will soon include Miracle Park, a green space designed for children of all abilities. The Swan Lake Iris Garden contains all eight known species of Swans, a butterfly garden and several varieties of plants and flowers. It also hosts the annual Iris Festival in May and a free light display during the holiday season.
There are a few local spots with essentials and quick bites nearby
Cane Savannah is mostly residential, with the exception of Dollar General, the bar Ravens Nest and Spann’s and a convenience store that also sells deli meat and produce. For more shopping and dining options, residents can commute into town. “It’s really not bad,” Burkett says of the drive. “It’s about 10 to 15 minutes away max.” Leo’s Wings is a family-owned restaurant best known for its chicken wings and wide variety of sauces. There are also some fast-food options in nearby shopping plazas. Walmart and Food Lion are the closest grocery stores.
McCrays Mill Road links Cane Savannah to downtown Sumter
The area’s rural nature makes it car-dependent. Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital is around 7 miles away on McCrays Mill Road, which leads directly to downtown and connects with U.S Route 521. Shaw Air Force Base is close to 8 miles from the neighborhood. Columbia, South Carolina, is about 40 miles west, and Columbia Metropolitan Airport has non-stop flights to major cities, like Orlando, Chicago and New York. The neighborhood has a severe fire and wind risk, as well as a major heat risk, according to First Street.
