Dalzell
Ranch-style homes built between the 1970s and 2020s
Dalzell is comprised of multiple subdivisions developed between the 1970s and 2020s. Most homes reflect a similar ranch-style architecture, with sturdy brick exteriors and open, one-story floorplans. “There may be a few houses that are 2,000 – maybe 2,500 – square feet,” Morse says, “but most of the ones you’ll see over there are closer to 1,300 to 1,700 square feet.” Homes built after the ‘90s showcase more of a New Traditional style. Their cross-gable roofs pitch above attached one- to two-car garages. Some homes from the 1970s feature low-pitched hip roofs that stretch across breezy carports. Inside, many of the older properties are updated to feature new wood flooring and remodeled kitchens. Listings in Dalzell typically range between $125,000 to $250,000, but some fixer-uppers can cost under $100,000.Dual enrollment programs at Crestwood High School
Dalzell is zoned for the Sumter School District. Preschoolers can begin at Oakland Primary School, which scores a B on Niche. Second graders move on to the C-plus-rated Shaw Heights Elementary before completing fifth grade at High Hills Elementary, which scores a solid C. Hillcrest Middle and Crestwood High both get C-plus’. All-star NBA player Ja Morant graduated from Crestwood High School in 2017. Along with its championship basketball team, Crestwood offers a dual enrollment program through its partnership with the University of South Carolina-Sumter.Frierson Road links to the Shaw Air Force Base
Dalzell sits on the north side of Sumter County along U.S. Route 521. From the highway, residents can drive about 10 miles south to reach the restaurants and shops in Downtown Sumter. Frierson Road is a convenient shortcut to the Shaw Air Force Base. It crosses Route 521 and immediately links to the base’s back gate. The north end of the highway intersects with Interstate 20, which connects west to the state’s capital city. In Columbia, locals can access the airport and one of South Carolina’s largest medical centers, Prisma Health Richland Hospital.Eat a southern-style breakfast at Paul’s Diner
Paul’s Diner is a staple spot for breakfast on Saturday mornings. Squeezed next to the locally owned convenience store, Paul’s serves Southern-style breakfast platters and hand-breaded fried chicken for lunch. Family Dollar sells pantry staples and everyday essentials right down the street. Residents drive 7 miles into town to shop for groceries and household items at Sumter IGA Plus. It’s only a few blocks from here to the big box retailers and local businesses on Broad Street.Beech Creek Golf Club is only 8 miles away
There’s not much to do in Dalzell, but plenty of recreation is just a short drive away. Golfers can drive about 8 miles southwest to play on the 18-hole course at the Beech Creek Golf Club. On base, military families can visit Sumter Skate Park or compete on the club softball or baseball teams. Poinsett State Park offers miles of hiking through the High Hills of Santee region, about 20 miles south. For history museums, art galleries and more, Morse says, “A lot of people will drive into Downtown Sumter.”
