The community derives its name from its neighborhood park, and access to local green spaces is one of Palmetto Park's most notable features. Palmetto Park is a relaxing recreation area where visitors go fishing at the pond, sit at the gazebo and watch flocks of geese and ducks. The park also has a popular playground with a splash pad and a dog park. Bobby Richardson Sports Complex is adjacent to the park, offering several ballfields, basketball courts, a track and the Palmetto Tennis Center. Palmetto Park is only 15 miles from hiking and camping in Manchester State Forest. Lake Marion is 30 miles away and offers fishing, boating, swimming and wakeboarding.
Another option for residents is Swan Lake Iris Gardens, which spans 150 acres of lush gardens and trails. “Swan Lake Iris Gardens is one of the things we’re most known for here in Sumter,” says Strickland. “There’s the wonderful Iris Festival in the spring and a holiday light show in December. People have events and wedding receptions at the pavilion—it’s a super popular place. Not to mention, there are all 8 species of swans here in the lake, which isn’t seen anywhere else.” Shaded paths lead to butterfly gardens, lookout points along Swan Lake and the Braille Garden, which offers plaques with Braille to help visually impaired visitors enjoy the park.

Broad Street is the heart of dining and retail in Sumter
Palmetto Park is bordered on the east by Broad Street, which offers some of the city's main retail areas. Broad Street has an ALDI, a Piggly Wiggly and a Walmart.
