Major upgrades coming to Stone Hill in 2024 and 2025
Stone Hill is one of a few South Sumter neighborhoods getting major upgrades over the next few years. A brand-new art-themed park opened on the community's west side at the end of 2024. Along with a playground and rainbow-colored basketball courts, the South Sumter Art Park will display a rotating collection of art installations designed by residents who grew up on the city's south side. This project "is just the beginning of a series of renovations along Manning Avenue," says Talmadge Tobias, a longtime Sumter resident and Broker at Re/Max Summit. In 2025, new bike lanes and freshly paved sidewalks will trim the road, making it easier for folks to access all the downtown shops and restaurants.

Narrow streets with modest single-family homes
Stone Hill's narrow residential streets branch off U.S. Highway 15, leading to the neighborhood's modest single-family homes. Manufactured houses are common throughout the area. Some sit side by side in mobile home communities, while others are spread out on larger lots. Older bungalows and ranch-style homes are situated west of the highway on residential blocks. Homes here rarely come on the market. Only three properties, including an empty lot, were sold in Stone Hill from 2023 to 2024. From these sales, one brand new home went for $220,000, while a fixer-upper cost just under $18,000.

South Sumter Art Park replaced the old Sheriff's office
One of Sumter's most recent revitalization projects broke ground in Stone Hill in 2024. Replacing the former Sumter County Sheriff's Office, the new South Sumter Art Park features rainbow-colored basketball courts and an art-themed playground. Another new inclusive playground opened about a half mile away at South Sumter Park. Completely renovated in 2024, the park now has pickleball courts, a baseball field and a splash pad. In 2025, Phase 2 of the renovations will add an open-air basketball gym and connecting sidewalks.

U.S. Highway 15 cuts through Stone Hill
U.S. Highway 15 is a major throughway cutting straight across Stone Hill. It quickly links to Downtown Sumter and the city's only full-service medical center, Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. The route continues north to U.S. Highway 378, which leads to South Carolina's capital city in about 45 miles. From here, the Columbia Metropolitan Airport offers direct flights to several major U.S. cities, including Washington D.C., Miami and Chicago. Many roads throughout Sumter are unpaved, including a few in Stone Hill. Though the city began resurfacing many of these streets in 2024, flooding is still an issue for some neighborhood residents.
Honey Fried Chicken Chinese is over 20 year old
Everyday conveniences and a couple of local hot spots surround Stone Hill. Along Manning Avenue, Honey Fried Chicken Chinese is a family-owned business that's been around for over 20 years. It serves traditional Chinese take-out right down the road from the Dollar General and Piggly Wiggly. Brotha's is another local restaurant with Southern-style dishes "that taste just like your grandma made it," says Tobias. Independent shops, breweries and more restaurants sit just 2 miles up the road in Downtown Sumter.
