Fishing gear, hunting supplies and country cookin’ at Batten’s
At the far west end of Wedgefield Road, Batten’s has been a local favorite for over 60 years. The little general store sells fishing gear and hunting supplies and doubles as an old-fashioned diner. Surrounded by Sumter memorabilia and taxidermy mounts, Batten’s dining room serves home-cooked country dishes every day of the week. The Dollar General has pantry staples and household essentials just down the road. Residents can drive about 7 miles north to the local Food Lion for larger grocery trips.Wedgefield Road links downtown in about 10 miles
South Carolina Highway 763 greets South Carolina Highway 261 in the middle of Wedgefield. Locally known as Wedgefield Road, Highway 763 links to Sumter’s only hospital in about 10 miles. Residents can follow Highway 261 north to quickly access U.S. Route 378. From here, it’s just a 7-mile drive to the Shaw Air Force Base and about 45 miles to Columbia Metropolitan Airport.Long commutes to Sumter public schools
Wedgefield is zoned for the Sumter School District. Manchester Elementary sits about 12 miles south and scores a C-minus on Niche. Fewer than 15 miles southeast, Furman Middle and Lakewood High Schools earn solid C-ratings. Students at Lakewood can get a head start on college or begin their future careers through the dual enrollment program at Central Carolina Technical College.A rural suburb in the High Hills of Santee Region
Wedgefield gets its name from its “wedge” position in the High Hills of Santee region, on the far west outskirts of Sumter County. The rural neighborhood borders a unique geographical area in the center of South Carolina, where rolling sandhills and grassy marshlands meet the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. While miles of hiking trails are fewer than ten miles south at Poinsett State Park, Wedgefield’s manufactured and ranch-style homes are just ten miles west of the local restaurants and shops on Main Street.Ranch-style homes and New Traditional homes from the 2020s
Most of the homes in Wedgefield were built between the early 2000s and 2020s. The oldest ranch-style homes are manufactured and feature neutral vinyl siding with slightly lifted brick foundations. Recently developed New Traditional-style houses sit closer together in small subdivisions like Middleton. Gradually developing since 2022, the community offers new homes spread out on half- to one-acre lots. Most of the old or new listings range between $100,000 and $300,000, but some of the older mobile homes can go for $75,000. While rare, a few custom-built homes on multi-acre lots can range between $500,000 and $850,000.Military practice next door at the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range
Wedgefield sits immediately north of a 12,500-acre military practice range owned by the U.S. Department of Defense. While it’s officially titled the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, “us locals just like to call it the bombing range,” Seavert says. “You can actually hear these giant bombs go off when they’re practicing – it’s pretty cool.” The practice times are inconsistent, but for most Wedgefield residents, the “sound of freedom” is nearly an everyday occurrence.
