Newer neighborhood at the eastern frontier of the Madison metro area

Meadow Crossing is a recently built neighborhood on the eastern edge of Sun Prairie, a quickly developing suburb northeast of Madison. Sun Prairie’s overall growth in recent years is a big part of the appeal of Meadow Crossing. “All the growth has really helped the Northeast side of Madison,” says Matt Deadman, a broker associate and Realtor with Real Broker LLC. “It’s helped Deforest, it’s helped Columbus, and all the communities have benefited from Sun Prairie as a whole just blowing up.” Meadow Crossing’s existence results from this increase in local housing demand. Veridian Homes, the largest builder in Wisconsin, built all of Meadow Crossing, with the first homes being constructed around 2010. Farmland still borders the neighborhood’s eastern edge, making Meadow Crossing, at least for now, the eastern frontier of the Madison metro.

Veridian Homes developed Meadow Crossing in the 2010s

Houses in Meadow Crossing are quite new, all built since 2010. “It’s a quiet neighborhood of single-family homes,” says Paul Treige, a new homes specialist with Veridian. While the homes tend to be similar because they were all built by the same company, there is still some variety in designs. Home styles include Colonial Revival, ranch-style homes, and Craftsman styles. Prices range from $400,000 to $580,000. “It’s a matter of price point, quality and location,” Treige says. “Sun Prairie has been a steady growth market, and there’s been a shortage of homes. If you build a decent neighborhood with decent houses, people will come.” Because the neighborhood is new and is bordered by open farmland, there aren’t many mature trees yet. A few condos sit along the western edge of Meadow Crossing. They cost between $350,000 and $400,000.

Access to Madison and surrounding communities

Sun Prairie’s location is a significant part of its appeal. “I think people like the location as it relates to the Madison area,” Deadman says. “It’s on the northeast side of Madison, so you can easily get anywhere by going up north on Highway 151. You can head up to Green Bay, Appleton, Columbus, Beaver Dam, any of those communities.” Downtown Madison is about 17 miles away. “You can get downtown in like 18 minutes,” Treige says. “And you’re basically 6 minutes from the interstate to Milwaukee.” Interstate 94 is about 5 miles south of Meadow Crossing. University of Wisconsin Health’s East Madison Hospital is under 8 miles away, and the Dane County Regional Airport is about 12 miles away.

Specialty pizzas on offer at Sal’s Tomato Pies

Across town, western Sun Prairie, particularly along Grand Avenue, has seen intense growth in recent years. “There’s a Menards, a Costco, a Target, all these strip malls,” Deadman says. “If you need it, it's on Grand Avenue.” Quite a few chain restaurants dot that area as well. For locally owned dining closer to Meadow Crossing, residents can enjoy one of the Madison area’s favorite pizzerias, Sal’s Tomato Pies or sample pints at Full Mile Beer Company & Kitchen. “Chicken Licks is just outside Sun Prairie, not far from Meadow Crossing,” Deadman says. “They have really good chicken wings.” For groceries, the closest option is a Pick ’n Save just north of the neighborhood.

Sun Prairie Mayor gets an earful on Groundhog Day

Sun Prairie’s farmers market runs all year, moving indoors during the winter. “They also do a Groundhog Day event,” Deadman says. “A number of years back, the groundhog bit the mayor’s ear as he leaned in to listen to the prediction. It was a big to-do.” The other major event is the annual Sweet Corn Festival, which takes place in August. Participants go through about 80 tons of sweet corn, all Wisconsin-grown.
