Access to it all near Sun Prairie’s downtown area
Old Village is a mixed-use part of Sun Prairie, a small city about 12 miles northeast of Madison that’s growing fast. It encompasses parts of the classic downtown area, commercial and manufacturing buildings, new developments of condos and apartments with single-family homes along several streets in the northern part of the neighborhood. “It’s kind of commercial,” says Matt Deadman, a Realtor and broker with Real Broker LLC. “There’s a little bit of condo development there. It’s a very traditional downtown with plenty of beautiful original old buildings. There are some single-family homes, too, but not as many.” The neighborhood’s central location gives residents access to city events, parks, shopping and dining. A natural gas explosion in 2018 rocked the area and the city as a whole, leading to the motto "Sun Prairie Strong."
Jimmy the Groundhog takes center stage in Cannery Square
Sun Prairie has two long-running annual events. In winter, a multi-day extravaganza called Frozen Fest leads up to Jimmy the Groundhog’s star turn on Groundhog’s Day, in Cannery Square. “Cannery Square is sort of the town center, even though it’s on the east side,” says Taylor Brown, economic development director for the City of Sun Prairie. “We have an amazing business improvement district that’s been working hard over the past several years.” Sun Prairie has had a Groundhog’s Day event for nearly 80 years.
In summer, attention turns to the Sweet Corn Festival, one of the largest food festivals in Wisconsin. Participants enjoy 80 tons of Wisconsin-grown corn. A weekly farmers market at Cannery Square each Saturday morning offers more fresh Wisconsin produce.
Bank of Sun Prairie Stadium now hosts the Culver’s Isthmus Bowl, a Division-III college football game. “The stadium is getting more notice and use, and it’s absolutely beautiful,” says Colleen Burke, economic development specialist with the City of Sun Prairie. “It holds 4,000 people.”

Full Mile Beer Company and Kitchen brews small-batch craft beer
The downtown area of Old Village has shopping and dining options. “We’ve always had a historic downtown,” Brown says. “In the early 2000s, there was lots of manufacturing, but the city invested in developing the area since then since they knew change was coming.” Sal’s Tomato Pies serves gourmet pizzas while Full Mile Beer Company & Kitchen pours its own small-batch beers, including IPAs, light lagers, stouts and English-style ales. Big-box stores, including Target and Costco, are available on Sun Prairie’s west side, about 4 miles from Old Village. Dave’s Guitar Shop sells instruments and performs repairs at its Old Village location. The closest grocery store is Pick ‘n Save, under 2 miles away from anywhere in the neighborhood.

Older homes with diverse styles and newer condos and apartments
Older single-family homes line the roads between Main and Windsor streets. These come in a wide range of styles, including Craftsman designs, bungalows and Queen Annes. “There are some old houses there. I wouldn’t necessarily say run down, but they are older,” Deadman says. Prices for single-family homes range from $230,000 to $465,000.
The rest of Old Village is a mix of apartment buildings, condos, manufacturing and retail shops and restaurants. Some of this is new development due to Sun Prairie’s recent population growth. The explosion in 2018 led to an outpouring of community support and a chance to meet housing demand. “Out of that tragedy comes growth,” Brown says. “We lost about 15 housing units, but in redeveloping that area after that loss, we’ve now added almost 200 hundred housing units.” Condos cost between $185,000 and $200,000.
There are many homes in the Old Village neighborhood that date back to the early 1900's.

Angell Park and Sheehan Park border the neighborhood
In addition to Cannery Square, which serves as a gathering and event space, Old Village borders two of Sun Prairie’s largest parks: Sheehan Park and the Angell Park complex. At Sheehan, residents can take advantage of sports courts and fields, a playground and hiking trails with wildflowers. The Angell Park complex hosts car races at the Angell Park Speedway and the Sun Prairie Dream Park, which volunteers built and continue to maintain. The Sun Prairie Dog Park is south of the neighborhood on Bird Street.
The skate park at Sheehan Park is great for scooters bikes or skate boards.
The Angell Park Speedway is a great place to see a midget racing event in the warmer months.
