Superior’s North End is geographically unique, surrounded by St. Louis and Superior bays, industrial and ship-tending sites and the city center. The neighborhood has a relatively smaller residential footprint than others nearby, measuring one-fifth of a square mile. “North End has been coming a long way,” says Realtor Colette Ogren of Re/Max Results. “There are pockets that are not exactly the best, but a lot of those houses are getting snapped up and being renovated.” Low-rise apartment complexes and two-bedroom single-family homes intermingle from block to block. Most of the housing was built at the start of the 20th century, and buyers are making the most of the older builds. Walk Score gives North End a 65 out of 100, or “somewhat walkable,” with several restaurants either in the neighborhood or immediately adjacent.

This old town has 100-year-old homes
There is a split to Superior’s North End, with manufacturers comprising about half of the real estate on the community’s west side. “The housing was all built because of the shipyards,” says Ogren. “There were sailors that would come and go; that’s basically how North End got built.” Residential streets form large blocks on the eastern half, with small businesses, apartment complexes and single-family homes mixed together. Streets are wide enough to park curbside, and sidewalks are spacious enough to bring the dog along. All of North End’s single-family homes are from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and there is no new development. “With the housing market the way it is, people are giving up on finding their dream home and instead buying one to make it their dream home,” says Ogren. Two-bedroom cottages and bungalows are common in this neighborhood, usually situated on lots of about a tenth of an acre. These typically sell between $60,000 and $195,000.

North End's public transportation
Winter Street, one of the community’s thoroughfares, passes along its south end for easy connection into Central Superior. Although driving is the preferred method of transportation here, some of Central Superior’s restaurants and attractions are walkable for those living on the southwest end. Locals can board the bus at the 6th Street and Hammond Avenue intersection bound for Downtown Duluth and complete the 4-mile trip in 11 minutes. Ten miles north is the Duluth International Airport, also accessible by bus, although the trip lasts about 42 minutes.

Playing sports at one of the community's parks
Outdoor-recreation options lean toward the center and eastern sides of the neighborhood, largely alongside residential areas. Kelly Park's main features include a pair of walking paths, a half-basketball court and a small playground. Veterans Park sits a third of a mile east, with its own playground, full basketball court, tennis courts and baseball/softball diamond. With the bayfront largely occupied by shipyards and other maritime commerce, public access to the water can be found about a mile and a half south at Barkers Island. This island has a small beach, a fishing pier and charter boat services for hire along with boat launch ramps. The SS Meteor Maritime Museum is on the north end of Barker's Island, adjacent to Barker's Island Festival Park. The Wisconsin Point Lighthouse, a popular tourist attraction, overlooks the island in the distance.

Although Central Superior has the most restaurants in the city by block, several spots for sit-down dining are available within North End. A casual drink to end the week can be had at Anchor Bar and Grill, known for its nautical décor, and the Tower Avenue Tavern, a hole-in-the-wall bar that streams football games. Both Izzy’s BBQ Lounge & Grill and Hammond Steak House serve savory entrees, such as racks of ribs and ribeyes. Folks have to drive south into Central Superior for groceries.
