Living just outside Central Superior

A mile past Superior’s last bus stop on Highway 35, South End's connection to the city can seem tenuous. Forests and grass fields surround the community almost completely, which only adds to the out-of-town sensibility. But what is lost in a direct link to an urban lifestyle is gained by proximity to some of Superior’s best spots to spend the weekend, such as the Superior Municipal Forest or the Nemadji Golf Course. “There’s so much in Duluth that people forget we have a lot here in Superior,” says Realtor Megan Wilson of Re/Max Results.

Spending time outdoors in South End

Superior Municipal Forest, which blends into the wetlands and eventually the St Louis River, is just west of South End. Its more than 4,000 acres are prime real estate for hikers, mountain bikers, disc golfers and, when winter arrives, snowmobilers, cross country skiers and ATV riders. Though not to be confused by the 4-million acre Superior National Forest in Minnesota, Superior Municipal Forest is still the third largest forest within city limits in the United States. With its varied terrain, canoeing and kayaking are also available.
Nemadji Golf Course is just east of the neighborhood. The 6,200-yard, par 71 course not only offers daily rates and season passes during warmer weather, but also indoor golf simulators in the winter. Greens View Grill, the clubhouse restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a venue overlooking the course.
Just to the north of the neighborhood, adjacent to Richard Bong Memorial Airport, Gondik Law Speedway promotes semi-pro auto races from May into September on its three-eighths mile dirt track.

Gridded streets display century-old homes

South End’s streets form a neat grid, showcasing cottages, foursquares and traditional-style homes. Because Tower Avenue and its various businesses pass through the neighborhood, First Street scores South End a 76 out of 100, or “active,” for its sound levels. Lot sizes are predictably small, measuring between a tenth of an acre to a-quarter of an acre. Most three- and four-bedroom homes were built at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. These range in price from $100,000 to $400,000.

The legendary Dragon Boat Festival

“We’ve got so many cool events like Dragon Boat races in August,” says Wilson. “In Superior, the community really rallies around those events.” For one weekend a year, residents of Duluth and Superior meet at their aquatic divide for a friendly competition. Teams form to race the long, narrow boats along Barker’s Island while family and friends cheer from the shore. The race itself is sandwiched in the schedule between lower-stakes activities like tug of war and a 5k run. Local vendors sell food and drink, and music acts provide extra entertainment on Saturday afternoons.

Utilizing the bus is difficult

Route 35 makes commutes for business or pleasure into Central Superior fast and easy. The five-mile drive takes 10 minutes. Bus services don’t extend past the Walmart on Tower Avenue, stopping just outside South End. This makes for limited access to Central Superior and no access to Downtown Duluth or the Richard I Bong Memorial Airport by bus. The latter is no more than two miles up the road from the community's farthest homes, however, making for a short drive.

Locally owned spots along Tower Avenue

Nearly all restaurants and small businesses in the area cling to Tower Avenue. Folks can stop in for a bite at Wide World of Wings, which serves domestic beers alongside its wing baskets in a casual atmosphere. Next door is Bird’s Bar, a spot known for its dancing and karaoke nights. For a rustic barbecue experience, Mama T’s Smokin’ Eats is about a quarter mile south of the 61st Street intersection. Brisket sandwiches, ribs and hush puppies pile onto newspaper-lined baskets alongside mixed drinks. Fresh cuts can be brought home to the family from Superior Meats, the community butcher shop.
